Hi...
I have just revived a very old XL2-Automatic, 12", It runs well at high speed but will not idle. I have been trying to source a NOS Walbro HDC-15 after going through the carb a couple of times with no joy. I am also trying to find the specifications for the chain, but have been unable to find any part numbers. None of the IPLs that I've looked at give any clues about the chain. I was hoping that someone here could help me out. I feel that I'm 95% "there" but the carb has me going crazy.
Thanks!

XL2's either came with 1/4 pitch or 3/8 lo pro chain.

An XL-2 with a 1/4" pitch chain will be equipped with a 9-tooth sprocket, many early versions with a 12" bar were that way. Models with 3/8" lo pro pitch chain have a 6-tooth sprocket. Rebuilt Walbro HDC-27 carburetor : www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/apps/search?q=70330 If your XL-2 has the 3/8" lo profile chain here's a chain to fit a 12" bar: Oregon 91PX048G www.loggerchain.net

Thanks!
Are you saying that I can use a Walbro HDC-27 in place of the HDC-15 that is in the saw now (original)?
If I remember correctly, the sprocket is a 9 tooth so that would indicate a 1/4" pitch. Do you have any idea how many DL I need and what the correct gauge would be? The bar is the original Homelite 12" bar that the saw came with.

Welcome !
The HDC-27 should work ok as a substitute.
1/4" pitch .050 gauge 69 drive link for a 12" bar ( I triple checked on my '73 XL-2 ) : Oregon 25AP069G

You say it will run at full throttle, but die at idle? Is this with a bar & chain on the saw? Suggestion, check the clutch. If it has an "S" clutch, it could be broken. I've run across this on these saws, on rare occasions.
