If there's an ID tag on it the serial # will tell the age. Edit:Sorry,I read your post as having an XL2,your saw is an XL-12.I'm unable to read the serial #.(poor vision)

The late Chainsawlady's records show that they sold one on 5/10/69 with number 3006429. Next one was sold on 5/9/70 with number 3310607 or 3319969, not very clear to read. Probably made in 1969 or early 1970. If you need IPL, it should be 23817 or 23817-A. Hope this will be of help.

I'm new to these vintage homelite saws. Is it possible to find a new chain for it or would it be easier to sharpen it? If looking for one on ebay, would I search for a 23817 chain? Sorry, I'm very much a novice here.

It depends on how much life is left in your chain.A new chain can be purchased just about anywhere, but you'll need to know some specifics like the pitch, gauge, how many drive links, etc. The pitch is 3/8 (.375),gauge is .050,& for a 20 in.bar you'll need a chain with 72 drive links.I believe 59 drive links for a 16 in.bar (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

If you need to research it more, go to aceresinternet.com. At the top of the page, it will have sections to use to search for more information. Being new to chainsaws, I would suggest you get a file guide. Once you mess up the chain, sharpened wrong angle, very frustrating to get it corrected. One more thing. Check your bar. Chipping / uneven wear / discolored [ blue from getting hot] Check with Leon to see if he has any chain.

1965 would have had a much lower serial, likely in the 17XXXXX-19XXXXX range.
I thought the 7 digits only ran through roughly 1970, and a 31XXXXX is nearing the end of that style serial tag and 7 digit numbering.

I beg to differ. Joyce's sales record indicate that they sold a 207.... Serial number saw in mid January of 1966. I'm guessing that would have been produced either real late 65 or early 66. Or am I missing something??
