I have a 245 manufactured about 1985, bar and chain are trashed and need replacing. There is some confusion about what pitch I should select. The manual specifies .375, the original bar says .325, and the present chain on it is a .325 but it is not the original chain. Since the bar and chain are being replaced, the only old part left is the sprocket. The only markings on the sprocket is 32 stamped in it. It is an 8 tooth sprocket.
How do I tell what I need? Does it matter? If the sprocket is designed for .325 and I put on a .375 chain will it tear itself apart, make noise? what about the other way, .375 sprocket with a .325 chain? Or does it not matter? Is there such a thing as a sprocket size for the chain?
Ty.

Yes the sprocket must match the pitch of chain.

Is there a way to measure the sprocket size? If incorrect does it lunch itself out?

An 8-tooth sprocket stamped "32" is a .325 pitch. Optional sprockets for the 245 included a 7-tooth 3/8" pitch, and a 6-tooth 37/.375"(LP) pitch. Any significant wear or damage... the sprocket should be replaced. Running a new chain on a damaged or mismatched sprocket will cause problems.

Thank you everyone for explaining this. Thank you for the appreciation! If you need a new .325" sprocket, I see a NOS one available for a very reasonable 9.99.

Care to share? The current one I would call dimpled on the teeth, not bad for 37 years old. Does this count as needing to be replaced? The bar I got was NOS.

Regular bearing grease for cars? What should be looked for during inspection?

Regular bearing grease for cars? What should be looked for during inspection? I prefer high temp wheel bearing grease. Clutches and clutch drums get very hot during use.

Thanks for the information on the chain. Now I need help with the bar. The bar I have is part number PT-18321-G4. power tip, 18 inch,.325 pitch, .05 gauge. The new part was advertised with part number PT-18321-04, but the number stamped in the steel is D1 04 PY. Does anyone have information about this part nomenclature? Is it interchangeable?
