With the latest fix of an XL Auto I dug through my shed & found about 3 XL2s to fix & I just bought an XL on Feebay for $30 that's complete.I did a little research on these saws & after going through the ringer with my neighbor's XL I've come to appreciate these little guys.Once you get them out of their shell, which is relatively easy, they're not that bad to work on.I'm saving these little guys for when I have back surgery (yes again) since I'll not be allowed to lift anything over 10 lbs.I've ordered some parts from Parrish Implements in Ky.& have them here now.Buford is a heck of a good guy to deal with & I highly recommend him.I hope to make runners out of every one of these little saws, time will tell.So far I've gotten each saw to firer on a prime. They're missing the throttle triggers & linkages & most likely need a carb rebuild & new fuel & oil lines. They all seem to have good compression. The only saw I don't know much about is the one I just bought off Feebay.

The XL that I bought for $30 showeed up today & it's in remarkable shape. It has the original Homelite bar ( and probably original chain). The air filter was pretty much toasst as it crumbled apart when I pulled it out of it's place.I got it to fire on a prime & no more than that.I'm assuming that the carb needs a rebuild. This saw is identical to the one I just got going for my neighbor.Pics to come, but I don't think I'll be doing any work on it for a while yet.

For something to do today I tackled a Super2 & an XL.The Super2 was an easy fix,I just put a new fuel filter in it & it fired right up.It looks like this saw has low hrs.I pulled the oil cap off & noticed the cuck bill & fitting are missing, probably in the bottom of the tank. The XL I got yesterday & went through it quickly. The seller said the throttle trigger was stuck.I figured the linkage was unhooked & sure enough it was.I pulled the engine out of the case & this saw had a 1/2 tank of bar oil in it.I dumped it into a container & there was the fitting with the duck bill attached to it.I put a new oil line on & a new fuel filter.Someone had put oil in the fuel tank & that was probably why it got benched.I took the carb off & it was full of oil which probably saved the diaphragms. After I put the saw all back together 7 put fuel in it I pulled about 15 times & got nothing, even with a prime. The module must've died too.I saw that the carb is a Zama C2S with an 8.Does this carb use an RB17 kit?

I got a late start today, but figured out that it wasn't the module that was bad on the XL,it was a bad switch.I found another switch that was on a Super2 points saw,so I had to modify that switch to work on the XL.The saw fired right up &smoked like a locomotive for about a minute due to the oil in the carb.Once it ran for a bit ity clerared up & I had to make a small adjustment to the carb to get it to idle properly.Tomorrow I'll put a bar & chain on it & put oil in the tank to see if the oiler works.I'd post a pic,but my phone is on the fritz.

OK,I threw a bar & chain on the little devil & filled ther tank with oil & it's not oiling.I even filled the oil over the duck bill to see if there were any bubbles & there were none.It was hard to tell tho with all ther vibration. The only other thing I can possibly think of is to put a new duck bill on the line. The outgoing oil line from the tank was kinked,so I had to pull the saw all apart again to get the kink out.The good thing is is that it's not blowing oil out the exhaust like the 1st XL I worked on due to the lines being crossed (or not crossed, depends on how one looks at it).

I picked up this XL a couple of weeks ago & it fired on a prime, but wouldn't pull fuel on it's own.I figured a carb rebuild was in order,so today I pulled the carb & rebuilt it & reinstalled it,along with a new air filter.I almost forgot to mention that the carb was full of oil.I guess someone had put bar oil in the fuel tank. This is the 2nd saw thatI've come across like that. The saw runs like a champ & oils, but not heavy enough for me.It has a fairly new chain with the ID of H1 on the drivers.

After I finished with the above saw,I pulled another one out that I've had laying around for about 2 1/2 yrs.now.I checked for spark & it didn't have any,so I pulled the recoil off to have a look. This is an older saw with a magnesium case.It has an electronic ignition which kinda surprised me.Apparently someone had replaced the one wire switch with a two wire switch & grounded it to the lamination on the module.I didn't think this was right as the module only needs a one wire switch.I disconnected both wires & then had spark & the saw fired on a prime. This saw has probably been sitting idle for at least 30 yrs.,so it's gonna need the works, the whole kit 'n kaboodle (carb rebuild, new fuel line & filter, new oil lines, etc.)

I started playing with this saw last week & found that the ignition module must've died after the 2 times it fired for me.Today I put a new switch, new module,& new duck bills in the fuel & oil tanks.I got the saw to run for a short time, but I think I'll have to pull the carb apart for a rebuild.I had the carb apart &* it looked good, the diaphragms were pliable, not stiff. It may also need crank seals.Surprisingly though the fuel & oil lines were all good. From what I could determine, this saw was made in '79.
