So I have a model 17 coming, has good compression and spark, previous owner says the starter won't engage every pull, im not familiar with these 50s starter set up's, is this not engaging every pull common? Is it serviceable? Thx

If you do not have a IPL for this saw, go to homepage, go down to Leons chainsaw parts & repair. Open IPL lists. It is there. Will show what parts are in unit. Will give you idea what to look for. Could just need cleaned / lubed.

The 17 has a ball drive starter, similar to what Briggs & Stratton used on the 3.5HP engines. Check out page 2 of the IPL: www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/uploads/3/9/7/9/39792537/homelite_model_17_chainsaw_ipl_22836_2.pdfThe ratchet area should be clean up well and that will help. You don't want any grease or heavy lube. Some sort of dry lube or RV slideout lube that doesn't attract dust will work the best. If the engine stops in just eh right spot, you may have to give the saw a tap to get the balls to drop into place. A bit finicky, but manageable!
