I bought a C51 on Feebay.Originally the seller was asking $99 or MO.I thought it to be too much,so I put it on my watch list. The other day I got an email saying the seller had dropped his price down to $69 or MO.I figured what the heck,I'll offer him $60 & see what happens.About 5 min.later I was notified that the seller accepted my offer.I'm supposed to get delivery by UPS tomorrow. It's supposed to have good compression, but I don't think it has spark.Of course the guy tried to start the saw with the fuel that was in the tank,so I'll probably have to go through the carb on this one.It looks to be in good shape with the decal still present on the fuel tank.Pics & more to come. Edit:I almost forgot - I only need a C52 now to complete my C series collection.I have a C5,2 C7s,3 C9s,a C71,C72,2 C91s & now a C51.

But do you have the the convertible gear drive for them? Wouldn't be a proper collection without one!!! (wink, wink)

Bob,I'd love to have the gear drive for at least one of these saws.I'd also like to get the automatic oiler add on for the C72.I'll have to start watching more intently.

I got the C51 today & was a bit disappointed. It was probably right up there in the top 10 dirtiest saws I've ever seen.It took me at least 2-3 hrs.just to clean it & I haven't pulled the throttle handle yet.It has no spark as I expected,so I pulled the flywheel & pulled the points out for a cleaning.I put them back in & gapped them at .015 (I'm getting pretty good at gapping them by eye).I put a little fuel in the cylinder & got nothing.I have a condenser on the way & it should be here on Fri.The plug wire looks like it's been "customized"They put a round wire doo-dad on the end of the plug wire so I have to unscrew the tip of the plug, put the wire on & replace the screw on tip. That's a regular PITA & it'll get changed to a plug boot & spring. They had the wrong plug in it - a NGK BM6,it should be a Champion J6C or equivalent.I checked for compression & IMO it's low - after 10 pulls only 95-100 psi.The piston & cylinder look good,so I think since the saw is complete I'll keep it & put new rings in.It's possible if I can get it to fire & run a bit that the compression may come up a bit.I just bought a set of rings on Feebay for $15.I didn't realize that the C51 had an overrunning bearing for the starter. Also,I'll have to pull the tank cover possibly for a cleaning,it's got a lot of rust going on in it.In lieu of pulling the tank cover I might try the Goof Off to see how that works out.Hopefully the cylinder is still good.I do have a friend who has a sandblasting cabinet if the Goof Off doesn't pan out.I also have a tank assembly from a C5 that should work.It looks great on the outside, but once I start removing covers it's just caked with hardened sludge on the cylinder, crankcase, throttle handle, recoil, etc.Something else that puzzled me was it looked like it has a 3/8 bar & chain, was that an option?

I really don't know where to begin with this one.I ended up pulling the throttle handle to begin with & cleaned the underside & the cylinder fins the best I could.Next I decided to pull the tank cover to see the extent of the corrosion. It was pretty ugly - I scraped off all the black hardened corrosion & it turned white.I decided it was mag rot (white death).I sanded it off the best I could & decided to pull the tank off too.Funny thing with the tank - it only had mag rot on the upper portion where there was no fuel during it's long slumber.I scraped & sanded there too to the best of my ability. Then I remembered a fellow member here who Highly recommended Gibbs lubricant for general purpose & to inhibit mag rot.I still had the can I had bought a few yrs.ago on hanmd & I sprayed down the tank & cover & rubbed it in.Thanks Dan! (lesorubcheek) I'll put the tank & cover back on tomorrow while I wait for the condenser to show up.It's possible that I may have a running C51 by tomorrow or Sat.depending on if it has enough compression.

Things didn't go quite as planned,as usual.I did get the tank back on,with some difficulties of course. One of the screws for the tank cover was bent & I had a helluva time with it.I had to put it in my vise to straighten it,I guess I got lucky there. Not so lucky on the carb though.I figured as long as I had the rear handle off I may as well take a look at the carb.Just like the rest of the saw it was in pretty bad shape & after I rebuilt it it wouldn't hold any pressure.I put it in water to see where it was leaking & it was bubbling out the impulse hole. When I took the carb apart it had water in it on the metering side.I had another HL141 on hand & put the rebuild kit in it.It has a very slow leak down compared to the original carb. Here's a pic of the fuel tank after I cleaned it up.It really looks much better than in the pic.

I got the C51 all back together & rebuilt the carb last night.I couldn't get tyhe carb to hold pressure at all & I found another identical carb that was a bit better.I put the carb on & it wouldn't draw fuel.I have no idea what's wrong with it,but suspect it to be faulty welch plugs.I took another carb off a C9 that I knew wasa good & got the saw to fire up,but it's in dire need of crank seals.I also pulled the clutch drum off for cleaning & lube the bearing & it does indeed have a 3/8 rim,bar & chain.I guess this winter I'll be doing crank seals on several of my C series saws.
