hi all. i am a newbie. and also new to homelites . i have a few stihls. but recently picked up 3 homelites and was hoping to at least get one to use . when i got them home. they all started but not so good . 2 were xl 12 and 1 was a super xl. i cleaned carbs on all 3 and the red one runs pretty good .anyway the blue xl12. cuts out when i rev her up .i will just concentrate on that one for now . i cleaned carb and screen inside. the diaphrams seemed good. but changed them anyway. i did not pop welch plugs. but those passages seem clear from spraying carb cleaner through . reed valve seems good . gas cap duck bill is good .the fuel filter seems good also. but i ran it with out filter and no change . i do have filters on order fueline is good and not falling apart. compression is 150. and i did a pressure and vac test and it held . cylinder and piston not scored. also. . like i said i am new to homelites. so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. i will try to post pics and i did take a video. i will try to post. it seems like a fuel problem to me. but coukd it be a coil problem and i am barking up the wrong tree. ?

Could you post UT & Serial number. Sounds like it "could" be ignition problem.

Welcome to HoH! From your description it sounds to me like the condenser is wek/breaking down.Have you tried a new plug?

If the carb is a Walbro SDC, it might be worth checking on the high speed check valve. It's under the welch plug on the high side. Here's my low-tech, unscientific check on a similar SDC:

thanks for video. your videos are very helpful. but i have a tillson 96a on that saw. is there a check valve under the welch plug ? i did spray cleaner through the hole and it seemed clear like you suggested in another carb video

Sometimes a vac test will show your seals to be good, but they might still be bad.I've found the most common seal that goes bad is the flywheel side seal. The flywheel side seal is also the easiest one to replace IMO.

I just noticed that you said the carb is a Tilly 96A.Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that carb is oversized for the saw.IIRC the 96A was used on 77 & 82cc saws.Depending on the color scheme (age) of your saws.I know on the blue & white saws it was common to have the Tilly HS1 through HS4.On the red saws it was more common to have the Walbro SDC 48 & SDC 62 carbs. The Tilly carbs were used, but not as common.

The SXL with the HS179A is right according to Acres' site. The XL-12 with the SDC sounds right too.The other saw with the HS96A isn't the right carb as far as I know. It'll run,but the saw will consume an excess amount of fuel & it won't burn it properly. If I'm not mistaken the 96A was used on the XL-902 (77cc),which is 20cc more than the SXL.Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Tillotson HS-96A is the original carb, it was used on units built after SN:3351316 ( late 1970 ).
Refer to the SUPER XL IPL:24228 Revision 1, page 8, for an illustration of the carburetor.
Carb appears to have a channel screen and retaining ring under the .1875" welch plug.
SN:21672614 ... built: Thursday - June 15 - of '72

so the 96a is the right carb for that saw i guess i should pop out welch plug and see if there is a blockage the saw has 150 compression. and piston and cylinder look very good unless the seals are bad even though they test good it also bogs under load like gas is getting cut off

Yeah,sorry I spoke too soon without researching more.The XL-902 used a HS56A,not a 96A.
