A retired friend just gave me his XL2 Auto chainsaw he received new sometime back in the last century (His wife bought it for him sometime between the late 1970's and early 80"s, he thinks). I've finished minimal restoration and am confused by the original owner's manual fuel mixing instructions. It calls for a 32:1 ratio when using SAE-40 motor oil "for best performance" or when using Homelite 2 cycle motor oil (SAE-30) the mix ratio is 16-1 gas to oil. However, when I recently called a Homelite customer service center and posed this question I was told that chainsaws made prior to 1990 must use a 32:1 ratio when using modern 2 cycle oil. So what is the best choice, the old saw has good compression and has a history of reliable service, it just has not been run for a couple of decades. Confused in St. Petersburg, Fl.
