New to the forum. Looked all over, can't find a good answer:
Homelite UT-10946D 18" 45cc two-stroke chainsaw
Where is the gap location on the piston for a single ring two-stroke piston ring? So far, every place I've looked has a locating pin in the piston groove; mine doesn't.
I believe the gap ought to go opposite the thrust side, and not over the wrist pin, so that would be adjacent to the intake port on this engine.
Am I correct?

I figured it out; there is indeed a locating pin in the piston groove. It's so small, I didn't see it...it's less than the size of a straight-pin that you'd use for sewing. And it is on the non-thrust side of the piston, facing the intake/

Hi Chipper,
Yeah, I was going to say there had to be a pin, but haven't touched anything that new, so didn't want to put my foot in my mouth (again). With 2-strokes the ring has to be held in position or the ends can migrate to a port and then get hung up on the port edge....making a real mess. But maybe someone has figured out how to make a 2-stroke gapless ring that is allowed to migrate. Just haven't seen one yet. Glad you figured it out.
regards, bob
