I have a Super XLAO and am rehabbing 2 XL12s. All have 16 inch bars and a 59 drive link chain seems to fit them all. I want to get a 20 or 24 inch bar and mate it to a ripping chain. The saws have different size studs that hold the bar on, Super bigger than 12s. When I investigate getting a bar on line they say they fit both Super XLs and XL12s. Clearly this is wrong. The bars have to have different width slots. I think I have figured out that Oregon bars ending in d196 fit the Super. What fits the XL12s?
The Super uses chains that are 3/8 X .050 and have 72 stamped on the drive links. The XL 12s came with chains stamped 72 on the DL. This may or may not be the correct chain. Do the Super and the 12s use the same chain?

You're just seeing the Oregon style designation on the drive links. And yes, if they're both running 3/8 chain, which they normally are, they will use the same chain.
As far as a bar being advertised to fit a SXL and an XL-12 being wrong, it's kind of a yes and no thing. Later (red) XL-12's have 3/8 studs like your Super XL. Some older SXL's (blue) have 5/16 studs like the XL-12's that you have.
So you're looking for a 20 or 24 inch bar for the SXL and a 20 or 24 inch bar for you XL-12's too?

I was hoping to run the longer bar on the Super and use it's bar on the second XL12 since that bar was worn out. Looks like I will have to buy a 16 inch bar for the XL12 and a 20 or 24 for the Super. What bar fits the 5/16 studs and Homelite oil port?

What bar fits the 5/16 studs and Homelite oil port? The bar for the Super XL will fit the 5/16 stud XL by using a spacer to take up the difference. A lot of bars are supplied with one. You can make your own out of tubing if needed. The oiler holes will line up between the two saws.

Homelite supplied an "S" spring spacer to adapt the 3/8" slot bars to the 5/16' studs on the earlier saws . I'm trying to run down the part number . As
mentioned above , spacers can be made using 3/8" OD metal automotive fuel/brake line which is 3/8" OD and 5/16" ID

You mentioned ripping chain. Do you plan on doing some milling? I used a Super 1050 for about ten years milling, 404 chain. I also used an XL924 with 30" bar and 3/8 chain. I found no advantage with ripping chain. I got just as smooth cuts with, out of the "Yellow Box", chain as with ripping, and I think it was faster. The big plus is, I could cut firewood and mill with standard chain. You can pretty much only mill with ripping chain.
