Hey guys. I'm working on a late model super ez auto. It's acting like it has an air leak and I suspect i found the problem. My question is the gasket. On the parts list it is called the cylinder gasket, part number 65018. It's a one piece gasket for the cylinder and for where the handle/carb housing attaches to the saw. Do I have to remove the cylinder or can I just cut the top half of the gasket and use that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a couple SEZs where I didn't want to remove the cylinder,it only needed the top portion of the gasket (made my own gasket) & it worked out fine.I also did the same on a SXL.

While replacing the upper half of the base gasket is technically possible, by cutting a new gasket, that does nothing for an engine air leak. It just stops dirty air from being drawn into the carburetor chamber.
What am I missing? Are you working on the intake manifold as well? Is that where your engine air leak was?

blythkd, thanks you for your observation. The thought never crossed my mind that it won't do anything for an engine air leak. I already replaced both crank seals. The engine starts to bog when it gets hot and sometimes runs at higher rpm when started. Maybe I'm missing something. I use fresh, ethanol free fuel and Amsoil 50:1. I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

Check the nuts that hold the cylinder on to make sure they're tight. If loose it could be sucking air there. If they're not loose, the cylinder gasket could be bad & sucking air there. You might end up replacing the entire base gasket, not a difficult job,but rather time consuming.

Good point on the cylinder nuts, they are prone to coming loose. Look that intake manifold over really well too. It's kind of a bakelite type material and has been known to crack, usually more common around that single screw on the lower right side.
