In the thread about thin piston rings Bill made a comment that he didn't like this line of saws. These two saws came into being after I moved on and left the hardware store so I know zip about them but it seems like there are lots of them in existence. They pop up on ebay quite often too. I've heard about the boot problem. They have solid state ignition and a reed valve design. Are they metal, plastic, or a combination? I was thinking about picking up a 360 just for kicks but that idea is on hold. I'd like to heard some comments about this line of Homelites.

330s and 360s are worlds apart in the design department. Please, don't compare these saws.... you'll make me sick. ;D
IMO, 350/360 Homelites are awesome. They use the same 2 piece electronic ignition as the 450,550,650,750 saws. Yes, they have boots and anti-vibe buffers that can wear out, but can be easily replaced. They are piston ported without reeds.
As for 330s, I only have a couple, and I don't think they're that bad. I just think of them as unconventional. They have an oddball air filter, strange housing design and oil pumps that are not exactly their best feature. As far as plastic, they use it for the air filter cover and starter housing, but the rest is magnesium. Even though they are a bit odd, its worth trying one to see if you like it or not.
But, if you come across a 350/360, they are definitely worth picking up. Heavy, sure, but a great saw that's build ruggedly and a joy to operate. I can see spending even up to 100 dollars on a nice 350 or 360. Personally wouldn't spend over 40 on a 330 though. That's just me.

I have a 330 that has been a good saw. The vacumn hose under the oil pump kinked and shut down the oiler. I replaced the diaphram(needlessly) before I discovered the problem. I replaced the boot before it became an issue. Other than those two issues...good saw. It pulls a 20" bar fine.
I missed a nice 350 on E_Pay over the weekend that went for over $100....no B&C...just powerhead.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I never had a 330 apart. I never knew that about them. I have never hated a saw more in my life than the 330's I have had. I know others had good luck with them. I just never did. Now I need to tear one down.
Bill I did not mention the 350/360. As I said I have never had good luck with the 330. I know others have. Bill

I started this thread not knowing anything about the 330 and 360 and had a belief that they were big brother little brother design. So, I've found out in a hurry the they are not related other than the paint job I guess the best thing would be to have one of each and make my own comparison ;D

I'm going to pass. For now, I have enough saws to keep me in firewood. Next project is getting an XL-800 running. I have to pull the crank from a 903 with a busted rear handle and install in the 800. Sounds like fun...

Would one of those 360s like to live in Texas... ;D I'll ask, but I think they like it in S. Alabama. ;D I bet they've got a ton of relatives though that are already settled in Texas that'll be closer to ya. Definitely no shortage on these saws. Dan

Sorry, but I think all of the pistons here are already married to a saw. I see 'em pop up on sleeze-bay every few months usually, so sure they're still out there.
