Bought a magnesium XL(parts saw) the other day so the little lady can play too The starter rope is hanging out, some screws missing etc. According to the IPL, the sprocket is held on the crankshaft with a "c" clip and thrust washer. The "C" clip is easy to find and cheap but I cannot find the thrust washer. Is there anything magic about this washer and can I use or make a washer out of my shop as long as it places enough tension on the sprocket ?

The thrust washer just has to be the same diameter as the sprocket or a little larger. It is there to keep the chain on the sprocket. The hole needs to be exactly the diameter of the end of the crankshaft. It is called a thrust washer on saws with a nut holding this together but on the XL with just a snap ring, there isn't much thrust. BTW, my revision 3 IPL warns not to reuse the snap ring. I see they went back to using a nut for holding the clutch together on the later saws.

I believe if you buy a Homie replacement sprocket, it comes with a new snap ring. Aftermarket sprockets do not include the snap ring.

Just measured one an XL and I'd think you could find a regular washer to fit it OK. Like A7 said earlier, it doesn't really perform any special job other than to keep the chain on the sprocket. The measurements were 1-1/4" OD, 3/8" ID and it was ~ 0.042" thick. Thickness will most likely be the toughest thing to match up, but I don't think it'll need to be exact to work OK. Just not too thick or it'll bind.
