My guess is that the engine is from an XL-800. The carburetor box has tapped holes for the manual oil pump.

I partially agree with you a7ecorsair,....the saw did have a horizontal oil pump cylinder there on the right side of the airbox....like an XL-800. However, if the wrap handle is original, its green color would indicate that this saw might have been an XL-902.
cjcocn,....was this unit found in Canada? Since XL-902s were Terry units,...that would be my guess.
The setup looks like a rube-goldberg setup....I can't imagine that it was ever planned to cover up part of the muffler like that....I am sure it worked ok, however, it looks like something that a creative person set up.
Hope that helps!

Forgive my ignorance when it comes to (in this case) Homelites, but did the XL-800 come with the green handle and the green and white on the recoil cover?
The only saw that looks similar on the acres site is the XL-902 AM.
... it popped with some mix in the cylinder (via the spark plug hole), but likely needs a carb rebuild.
I will get into that gear box before I run it to make sure that everything in it is good to go.
Thanks

Joe
I didn't see your post before I posted about the XL-902 AM. My dial-up connection slows me down some.
Your post helps a lot! The color scheme has me thinking along the same lines that you are. This saw was found here in Canada.
Thanks

Yup, sure looks like a 902. Weird how saws from the same group are so different. The 901, 903, and 904 have the manual oil pump mounted on the rear of the carburetor box where all the 800's and the 902 have it on the side above the muffler. The 902 isn't grouped in the parts catalog with the 901, 903, and 904 either.
