Maybe someone can explain this to me.
Why is it that thin rings are considered to be a "higher performance" orientation?
I understand that thinner rings will provide less drag against the cylinder, but they would also wear out faster due to a lower surface area to wear upon. Right?
So if we had two engines, the exact same bore/stroke/displacement/port timing/etc. and one was set up with a thin ring piston and the other a thick ring piston, is there going to be a noticable performance/longevity difference?

Heres what I have heard. Thinner rings seal better. Think a knife edge compared to a blunt edge. They are more flexible, can follow an irregular surface. They need less tension toget the job done so the wear issue should be like. Less friction, more power. Newer cars all use them so I guess they are tried and true, better materials now. Hope this helps.

How about a list of all the Homelites that used thin rings.... Here's the one's I can think of:
925 (only one in the series with thin rings) 350/360, 450,550,650,750 330 (and I think some used thick too) 410 540 (but not the 8800) Super 2100
Those are the one's I can think of. any others?

I never had a 330 apart. I never knew that about them. I have never hated a saw more in my life than the 330's I have had. I know others had good luck with them. I just never did. Now I need to tear one down.

And whats the difference between 650 and Super-650? Werner The most apparent difference is the addition of a fifth ant-vibe buffer on the Super. This is the same arrangement used on the 750. 650s only used 4 anti-vibes. There's bound to be a few other details that are different, but I don't have the IPLs handy at the moment to check 'em. Dan
