Greetings all! My in-laws have some trees in their front yard that need trimming, and in my younger days I might have climbed them to cut. These days I like to keep my feet on terra firma. Has anyone used such a device and might have a recommendation for a specific model? Amazon has one that cuts both directions for about $40. A little higher than my 16 ft pole saw reaches. Thanks in advance!

I was on a job about 2 months ago, when I got tapped by this little oriental guy, he asked me for a quote to take down some limbs over his garden, I walked with him to his back yard and there's a big @$$ green maple stretched across this whole green space area behind his home, from what I understood he bought some bogus rope saw off Amazon and tried limping this branch that was about 25ft up and around 6-9 around, halfway through the "chain" got stuck, now he has a 1/2 cut limb hanging over him while he's in the garden. I sat there in shock for a moment I couldn't believe someone would try to cut a limb that big that high up while being directly underneath it, with a frikin pocket survival saw, R&R do yourself a favor spend 40$ and rent a lift please don't buy one of them damn things, take 5 min and really think about it. Hell I'll donate 20$ for you to rent a lift.

As far as the chain on a rope, they are like most any tool and have their place. I’ve used one and I will admit it was not the easiest thing to use. It works a little better with two people where you can spread out at the bottom other wise the chain ends up cutting 3 sides of the limb at once. If there is another option I would certainly look into it

Thought I replied yesterday, must have forgot to hit the reply…thanks for the info guys. And Footstep your offer to fund my endeavor is greatly appreciated, your advice is worth more! 😁. No kidding, I was looking at a limb 6-9” and 25 ft in the air. Most of the limbs are pretty small…. Did the gentleman hire you to do the work? I’m going to try the manual pole saw and work close to the ground on a step ladder and see where that gets me… R&R

What kind of “lift” can you rent for 40 bucks? In my AO, you can rent a standard scissor lift for 40$ a day, of course the bigger the lift the more it cost. It's more of a point of spend the money and do it safely. my life & body parts along with those around me, are worth way more than a damn tree limb or equipment rental fee. He said that was to expensive. I smiled and said have a great day. Cheap ass...... R&R iam sure you'll do just fine with the pole & ladder, remember you can always tap a guy with a boom truck and offer him some cash for a quick lift. I did this when my wife closed her coffee shop, I had a ladder on the building set up like a scaffold, went to climb up, and I saw a comcast truck with a bucket lift pull up, he kinda gave me that WTF good luck look, so I walked over to him and offered him 50 bucks to use his bucket real quick to pull that sign. He said no problem moved 3 spaces over and we had that sign down in minutes along with my ladder scaffolding rig.
