Hi.
I picked up this Super 2 along with some other chainsaws this weekend at auction. I dismantled it to clean the carbon out and found that the piston skirt is all chewed up. Please see photo attached. Amazingly, the cylinder is not scored. The piston doesn't have a lot of scoring either. There is about 1/16 inch play between the piston and the wrist pin.
Does anyone know if this a common issue with these Super 2 models, or has anyone seen this before?

No it's not common. Those little engines are really pretty darned tough for what they are and what they were designed to be.
It's been beating on something that didn't belong in the crankcase. Not sure what that would have been. It's too much damage for a piece of the inlet reed. Looks like it was something of fair size and pretty solid too.
You didn't find anything foreign in the crankcase? If not, maybe someone else found the problem and removed it before you got it.

No, I didn't find anything in there, but I could tell it had been taken apart before because of the form-a-gasket used to reassemble it (and new seals). Thanks for the reply. I'll look for another piston.

Probably a piston from another exploded motor. Could be a crankshaft failed- or maybe a rod bearing came apart.

Possibly.
