My neighbor said his father bought this saw new. It has been sitting on the shelf for 10 years because it lost spark. He knows I like Homelites and just gave me this 650 and a super xl. My neighbor suspects the spark loss is from the coil. I was wondering if the coil is also known as the module and core? And if it is can I use a coil other than homelite part number 12669?

According to what I just read, the 650 had a 2 piece electronic module that was only specific to Homelite.Since it's a 2 piece module it's possible that only one of the pieces of the module is bad. There are tests to perform to make the determination as to which piece needs to be replaced.I personally don't know anything about those procedures, but others here do.It could also be possible that only the wire(s) need replacing.Pull the recoil off & carefully clean out all the debris that most likely has accumulated & you'll get a better idea as to what's going on for starters.Post some pics too.

I removed the starter cover this morning and found the ground wire was broken. I will solder a little extension piece on there tonight and hopefully it fires up. It has very good compression, really excited about this one.

There was plenty of good wire to use and I crimped a new connector on and put it back together. Added a little gas into the carb and it fired right up on the first pull. I also did a cold compression test and I got just over 200 psi in 4 pulls. I thought maybe there was a ton of carbon build up but I looked at the top of the piston through the spark plug hole and it was extremely clean, lots of metal showing on the piston head. Did these saws really have that much compression? Anyway I'll clean it and post more pictures.

Congrats on getting your Super 650 up and running. Not many around these days, my guess is the pro sawyers used them up until they were not worth fixing. I believe those saws were designed with high compression. Again, congratulations!

I'm close to finishing the saw. Starts easy and decompression valve works great. The carb was very clean, only needed new diaphragms. The cage bearing started to lose pins as soon as I removed it. Clutch shoes look good and so does the drum. The rim drive needs replacing, still waiting on the part to be delivered. I did the quick tip test while the saw was running to check the crank seals and the saw did fine. I should have it ready to go for a full run this weekend.

I finally got the saw out a couple days ago. I ran it through a 28 inch dead ash and it didn't disappoint. I think I have it tuned pretty close. It's not the best but, here is a short video of the end of a cut.
