Just got this XL925 and put fresh gas in her and tried to start it following the guide on the case cover. Says to hold down trigger and press in trigger lock button to lock trigger down. The lock button will sometimes stay pushed in but seems to have no bearing on locking the trigger down as evidenced by the position of the throttle linkage in the picture. So, is the linkage supposed to stay in the forward position for the wide open throttle position (all the way forward), when the locking pin is pushed in. And if the locking pin is not actually locking the trigger down and the linkage is not all the way forward, I guess I would have to take the handle apart and see what is going on?? And, i noticed the 2 screws by the spring loaded locking pin. I loosened both up and when turned the lower screw it would change how much the linkage moved when you pressed the trigger. So, not sure about the purpose of theses screws. Sorry for the basic questions, but this is my first Homelite saw and was just trying to give her a good home and maybe use it on occasion if I can get her running.

The throttle lock is not supposed to hold the throttle wide open. It's only meant to hold the throttle open enough to aid in starting. You've already discovered the adjustment screw, so just set that speed up enough so it starts easily without racing terribly fast, which wouldn't be that good on a cold engine.
Pure guess, but somewhere around 1/4 throttle is probably pretty close to the sweet spot.

Well based on the adjustment screw and the position of the throttle, I don't think the locking pin is doing anything. The low speed adjustment seems to be "fixed" by the little aluminum colored screw that sits against the plate that the linkage is attached to, (see pic above). As you can see from the pic, it appears it is screwed in pretty close to all the way in from looking at how the spring is compressed. So, I am assuming that "someone" did this either to set a fast idle or to not have to mess with the locking pin?? There is very little room to put your foot in the handle and when I was trying to start it, my foot kept either hitting the trigger or the locking pin would pop out. So, maybe that is why someone adjusted that screw in further?, just guessing of course. Or, is that screw normally adjusted in that far. Gonna try some starter fluid on her tomorrow and see if I can get it to pop.

You can take the 2 screws out of the rear handle on the right side and pop that side of the handle off to inspect the throttle lock parts. Maybe something is damaged? Also, pouring some gas mix down the carb is safer. If you're set on giving it a whiff of ether, pour a little oil in it first, directly in the exhaust into the bore is best if you happen to have the muffler cap off.
