I acquired an XL-103 about 2 yrs.ago & I fiddled with it a bit back then, but couldn't get it to fire.I pulled the saw out again yesterday & found that the plug wasn't correct.I got the saw running, but the compression is only at 115 psi.The saw is in really good shape,so I've decided to pull it down & give it new rings. The piston isn't scored, just discolored.I tried to start it again today, but I think it has no spark.More to come as things progress.

I was told that this saw may be a 103E with an electronic ignition, but I do remember that it had points & condenser.I pulled the flywheel today to verify it.I did manage to get it started again, but it stalled out & when warm it will not restart, this tells me the condenser is weak.I'm debating as to whether I should do new crank seals when I have it torn down,it's not exhibiting any symptoms of bad seals at this point.I'll put a new condenser in first & get it running properly first.

I'm not aware of a 103E, so if you find it has electronic ignition components, it would be neat to hear about. The XL-104 was produced with electronic ignition; the points were replaced with an electronic trigger and a modified condenser.

The front handle bracket was broken so I ordered a slightly used one from Leon (looked new to me) & it's about 1 in.longer in height than the old one & no matter what I do I can't get it to fit.It has a plate & a rubber type material that goes over the plate, then the bracket goes on over the top of both of those. The shoulder screws don't even tighten the bracket to the saw.
Edit:After making this last post I took another look at the 103 IPL & found that there are supposed to be grommets that go on the shoulder screws.Part # 64474.I do have some that are similar & are used on the SEZ.

Leon sent me another bracket & 2 new grommets for the handle.I installed them both today & they fit perfectly.I'm waiting on the rest of my parts I've got ordered from another supplier. In retrospect I should've ordered from Leon, but sometimes he doesnm't have all the parts I need.I just want to get it back together & running again to see how badly it needs the new rings.I did a compression test & it came in at 115 psi. It'll probably still cut,but not like a new saw.

I cleaned the points & put a new condenser in today & couldn't get the saw to start for anything.I've got fuel spilling out the decomp valve.I thopught I'd at least get the saw to run better than before, but I'm guessing the cylinder gasket has a leak & the compression is low.I've got a new set of rings & a new cylinder gasket for it,but I've never replaced rings before & there's no one here who will walk me through the process.I hate like hell to break a new set of rings,or install them wrong.

Not that anyone is reading this,BUT I got the saw started & then had to shut if off becauser the throttle linkage rod came unhooked from the carb. While the saw was shut off I thought I'd do another compression check, the saw was barely warm.It came in at 130 psi.Now that's not the best, but it isn't bad either for a saw that's around 55 yrs.old.Now what I can't figure out is the saw has plenty of compression & I put a new condenser in last week, cleaned the points & gapped them at .015,so why is this saw so damn hard to start?I'm thinking that it must be the carb. When I go to start it cold,or even restart it after running for a while I pull the choke on & it fires normal.I push the choke off & it'll pop a time or 2,then nothing.I rebuilt the carb 1 1/2 yrs.ago & could never get it to run back then.Come to find out I had the wrong plug in it.I've got a new CJ8 in it now. When the saw is running it runs great,it's just a real biotch to start.

It's been a while since I've posted about this saw.Today I dercided to get at it once again.I put fuel in it & tried to start it,but only got a few pops. That was it,I decided it was time for a tear down & new rings.I pulled the muffler, pulled the carb, pulled the coil, disconnected the oil lines,& was taking the carb to reed connector off & thought I'd look at the reeds. It looked like one of the reeds was broken,so I pulled the reed cage out & sure enough there was a broken reed. Now couple that with a missing gasket on the carb spacer & I have the explanation I was looking for as to why the saw was so damn hard to start, but it never screamed when it ran.Fortunately for me I had another complete reed assembly that came out of a trashed XL-123 that was the same.I'll make up the needed gasket on Sun.& put the saw back together. It should start easier & run better too.

I have had a few with the tips missing but never that bad. I'm surprised it started at all.

I now have a running & fully functional XL-103! I just finished up a little bit ago with reinstalling the carb, new spark plug,& reinstalling the coil.It fired up on the 2nd pull.A couple minor carb adjustments & it idles & throttles up very nicely.I just need to locate the air filter cover,I've got a spare XL-101 cover on it now.Almost 2 yrs.of working on this saw on & off & now I finally hit pay dirt. Now on to the next project,Lol.

I don't think I ever put any pics of the entire saw up,so here is the XL-103 that was a thorn in my side for almost 2 yrs.,LolExcuse the blue cover,I've misplaced the red cover for it.I think it may be in the SEZ bin,Lol.
