I have a 1986 model Super XL that I have recently rehabbed and put back into action. The saw runs great but it still has an annoying problem that I've never fixed. In use (especially in hardwood) it looses chain tension after about 30 min of cutting no matter how tight I torque the 2 bar nuts and no matter the age of the chain. Is this just the way these saws are or is something worn that can be replaced?

The chains tend to loosen as the chain and bar heat up in use. Homelite mentions it in their operations manuals. It is an annoying, but characteristic property of saws. The hard tip bars may be more prone to this than roller tip bars. I believe you can get away cold tensioning a roller tip bar a bit tighter, helping some with heat expansion.

So, the problem is more likely heat caused expansion of the chain and bar more than the bar nuts loosening due to heat and vibration?

Yep- Keep your scrench at the ready. There is a reason people carry one with their chainsaw all the time! And it will tighten back up some as it cools later-

Also keep dirt out of the bar nut threads. Sawdust and oil will effect torque if the nuts are dirty.
