I have an interesting finding on my family XL1-101 Homelite that I have recently gone through getting tuned and working properly again. Is it reasonable to have the idle mixture screw setting at 2 1/4 turn out? That is where it is idling and running best. The saw works great. I had enough consternation to take the carburetor back down and check all the idle passages, as well as removing the idle mix screw and welch plug for a good look. All was clear and debris free. There seems to be no problems with any air leaks or crank seal failure.
Seems to me that 2 1/4 turns is a LOT. Thanks for any insights or ideas.

I've found that for the most part no 2 carbs are EXACTLY alike. Each one has their own unique "personality",so to speak. If the saw is running fine at 2 1/4 turns out, then go with it.I'd be worried if it was more the opposite. As long as the saw isn't showing signs of excess smoking out the exhaust,& it has plenty of pep on the throttle when revving it up & in the cut, then just go with it.Of course this is my un-professional opinion & others might have an idea as to why your saw likes to have the carb settings where they are.

It is definitely not smoking and has really good throttle response. It idles very smoothly at what seems a little slow rpm. The high needle is a little over 1 turn out. If I back the idle screw out a little over 1/2 or more turn, it starts stumbling rich. Crazy thing seems to be running smoothly! Just happened to notice that the IPL shows the high speed and the low speed needles are different part numbers. Could I possibly have them switched around??

Chances are the needles won't fit in the opposite holes, one is usually longer than the other & just impossible to swap out.Try switching them, but don't force anything. One should be bigger in diameter too, making it impossible to switch.I believe your saw has a Walbro SDC carb on it?

Yes the original Walbro SDC-1. Think I'll take both out for a little comparison and see how they compare.

OK-no mixing these up. The high speed is considerably longer. And they both have different tip shape configurations.

Well after another carburetor removal and internal passage cleaning of those small idle/main passages I have some different settings on the adjustments. I carefully reassembled the carb, checked the fuel inlet adjustment, installed the covers carefully, aligned the gaskets and then put it to the wood. It now runs with 1 1/2 turns out on idle and 1 turn out on the high speed. Really stable idle and is working like it should. Not really certain what may have changed, but it is on the money now! XL101 working 100% If those settings are way off on the needle adjustments, there is probably something that is not quite right!
