Hello. I’ve got an old xl2 automatic. No spark. Plugs good, I’ve reset the module gap. Does anyone know how to test the module with a multi-meter? Thanks for any help.

You can do a continuity test with an ohmmeter. It might be more productive to clean the points however if it has been more than a year since it last ran. The points should be cleaned with a points file available at NAPA or other parts outlets. Then gapped correctly.
If you are concerned about the coil, use an ohmmeter to test for continuity from the points lead to ground and the high tension lead to ground. If there is none in either circuit the coil is bad. The high tension side should have roughly 10 to 20 times the resistance of the points side. This is not a definitive test but it gets me by. It these are OK, you should have spark.
If still no spark the condenser may be bad. You need a real condenser tester to check that, an NOS condenser can be bad from all the years of sitting.
Be sure your spark testing is done with the kill switch disconnected as it can be bad and result in no spark. Check the lead to the kill switch for ground faults.

Thanks for that reply. My saw must be a newer (late 70s) model, because I’m pretty sure there are no points. All,I can find is a sealed black “module” that must make a spark as the flywheel magnets rotate past it. I’m pretty frustrated as yesterday putting the engine in the case I broke off the “on-off” switch connector. I can’t find any of that stuff for sale even at Leon’s.

Unfortunate that the connector broke off at the module . There are new and preowned Ignition Modules available on eBay ... search for a ; homelite 94711 .
