Hi folks,I'm trying to figure out which chain breaker/spinner I should get.I've seen some cheapies on Feebay for as little as $32 & some more expensive ones for almost $400.I'll be making an occasional chain here & there,or shortening one as needed.I've used a hammer to peen over rivets in days of old when I used to break chains somewhat regularly when I was 16 & didn't really know what I was doing with a saw.I'd like a tool that can accommodate all sizes of chain from 1/4 in.to 1/2 in.I found one that might just fit the ticket. All critiquing is welcome.

I have an Oregon set and they work great. Certainly over kill (cost wise to buy new) for me but I picked it up at an auction.
The one in your pic is also sold at harbor freight. They have about 35 reviews over there.
As usual, a lot of complaints about broken punches for the breaker. They break on all the ones made if you don't line the punch up with the center of the rivet. Lining up those two little things is a tough task for old eyes.
The breaker is nice to have and speeds things up but I don't really find it necessary if you have a grinder.
The spinner is definitely worth having.

That looks similar to the ones I have from Northern Tool...I haven't broken anything yet and they do what I need to do. I've even spun rivets on 1/2" chain with good results.

After reading the miserable alignment of the spinner bits on some cheapy spinners, I decided to make my own. I made this spinner for around $30 for high thrust bearings for the spinner end. Thick massive and precision steel frame. Even a grease fitting for the thrust bearing set. Clamp it in my bench vice, work super great on 1/4 thru .404. Saved enough money to buy the heavy duty breaker, Oregon 24548-si from equipatron for around $160 in jan 2018. atlanticgreen.com/images/spinnerfinished1.jpgadded: I had bought a lot of new 1/4" 84DL stihl chain for very very good price. I bought a 10 pack of stihl presets and cut the chains all down for my early homelite XL2. mini mac, and Poulan S25DA & Craftsman 2.1. All together 6 different sizes and extra loops. I've done a small amount of other sizes chains. added: heard of guys buying the el-cheapo spinners and tweaking the head alignment with a 3' pipewrench to get better (acceptable alignment). That's when I decided to do my own...
