Hi all... could use some help. I have a 2 trigger Super 2 that I could use some help with.
I do not have serial or model... sticker came off. My question is about the thrust washer on the clutch assy. My saw uses a retaining ring on the shaft… not a nut to disassemble the clutch. It also has the S-Clutch not the spring kind. Question is... I see some parts drawings with 2 washes (one inside and one outside the hub) ...and some with only 1 washer (outside the hub).
I am kinda going with the idea that it is one because this parts drawing is the only model drawing I have yet found that has the "NOTE 5" that is about the retaining ring.
I bought this “rebuilt” off eBay, probably from someone on this forum many years ago. The chain did always move more than I thought it should when throttled down. (would stop it I touched it to wood)
... so wondering if it sticks to the clutch a bit because there is no washer on the inside? Anyway I had not used it in a while and had to replace the ignition coil (another story) but found that it had lost it's clip and washer at some point. … and when I took the hub off there was no washer under it. Like I said... I have found drawings both ways so do I get one or two washers? Thanks... just want to have it correct kinda getting sick of reassembling the whole thing .. .this is the 5th time... getting better at it now.

Oh... Also... I bought a 3/8 retaining clip from the hardware store... will that work or was it something else? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Jake.
According to the manual, the early models using the retaining ring only had the one washer. Probably didn't need the one between the sprocket cup and the clutch as the ring left some free play between them unlike the nut which might cinch it down. You should be ok with just the one washer. If you wanted to put the second one inbetween that would probably be ok also, so long as everything moves freely
The snap rings you bought I don't think will work as the Tru-Arc ring that was on there was likely a good bit thicker.
This is a screenshot from the service manual.

Wow.. thanks for the quick reply ... that's what i thought - got one washer coming... are they symmetrical (can go on either way)?
I guess the shape of the ring is OK... but the thickness? ... you could be correct.... but the groove ant much... barely catches a fingernail.
Found this original: (looks the same-ish) p/n: 93972 (found on that "NOTE 5" detail)
Thanks again Jake

Welcome Jake.
My 1980 Terry built SUPER-2 that uses the retaining ring had two thrust washers. Upon replacing the spur/drum with an Oregon unit there was only enough clearance for one outer thrust washer, and had to bevel the edge of the S-clutch to prevent it from rubbing on the drum. The retaining rings shown in your pic should work, just don't over stretch it and make sure the sharp side faces the outside.

Thanks, I did not know there was a direction for the retaining ring - got it. I was gona ask later but since you brought it up - (and I can not find) what the 2 carb adjustment screws do... I assume low and idle? Not sure which is which... and a procedure for setting them. I am sure you set one them then adjust the other other.
Can someone point me to this? I have the parts manual and the service guide - but seems like all the good stuff I need is in a users manual that I can not find anywhere.
Thanks again!

Search for Homelite XL Owners & Operating Manual on this site. Page 19 has the carburetor adjustment procedure.. sorry couldn't post a direct link for some reason. www.manualslib.com
