Latest two, $20 each. One is the super rare, Stihl 075, back when they were still made by Homelite. Maybe I can keep the bar and throw the big square part away. The other is one I kept passing up, I just didn't want to get into Blade saws, but this thing is just so big and cool, I finally brought it home, Wright B520, 115CC's. It's a weird saw, and I haven't figured it all out yet. I pulled the recoil off and shot it full of WD40 and kept working it and the Fairbanks Morse recoil freed up and it pulls over. But, there is no on off switch. If it's running and you want to set it down and let it idle, you push the trigger to the left. If you want to turn it off, you let go of the trigger, and it shuts off. It's direct drive with no clutch, so if you set it down and let it idle, the blade continues to go back and forth. They made different blades for different purposes. They made a butchering blade for big slaughter houses. I didn't know it, but the Wright saws are a division of Beard Poulan. My Poulan Super 68 does not have an on off switch either. The ignition is always on, and it has a kill button to push down and ground it out. Every time I go by this shop I say, "well, that's it, I've cleaned him out". Then I look in another corner and there are more. I'm up to 19 saws from him, and I found two more Model 17's and I still haven't got back in the corner for the Original EZ. I forget if I posted the pic of the Poulan 53A 82'CC's. I think it's my first saw purchase off CL, $20 also, so I'll stick it in.

My Echo dealer told me he had something for me, and gave me a fellows #. He probably would have given me the saws just to keep from throwing them away. But, I needed the recoil cover for my other Echo 280E and I just have a soft spot for the XL12 series, so I gave him $15 each. Plus, if the homeowner gives the Echo dealer good feed back, he might send me more saws. The Super XL Automatic has oily dust and dirt on it bad. He said it's been so many years since it ran he can't start to guess. he said he built his house in 77 and a neighbor gave it to him, used. It had a new air filter on it, but when I pulled it, it was solid fine dust and oil, black as coal. I sprayed it out with Breakclean, cleaned out the carb throat, and put a shot of mix in it. Couple pulls and it fired up. Did that a couple times and then filled the tank. Runs, idles, revs great. The Echo carb box was pretty darn clean, so I had hopes of it starting right up and running too. Well, it fired up on a prime. Filled the tank and primed it, but it wouldn't draw from the tank. Primed it at least 10 times and it went right off. Hopping maybe it would draw enogh fuel into the carb to mosten the diaphragms. I'll keep trying for a few days and see if it wants to star in a cutting video, other wise I'll have to pull the carb, Joe. youtu.be/9endh1hURYs

Oh, the guy said it was older than 77, I thought it may have been newer with the plastic air box cover. The serial is 473390310, UT is 100453. I had the serial decoding down a couple years ago, need a refresher course, I forgot how it goes.

I'm bidding on an, on line auction, for another Super XL Automatic. I have the winning bid so far at $1. Sale ends Friday. The serial is 400150030. Does this serial decode as Assembly line 4 year 2000 day 150 unit 030
It looks exactly like the one I got last week that was made in 73. I find it hard to believe it could go to 2000 with virtually no visible changes. It has the same black plastic air box cover. The one last week has a 16" bar, I got two new chains for it today at my Stihl dealers buy one get one free price of $34 dollars for the two. The one at this weeks auction has a 20" bar. The UT numbers are different.
Last weeks saw UT # was 100453. This weeks saw UT # is 10499A.

I think the way it should decode is 0030 unit made on the 15th day of either 1980 or 1990,assembly line 4.As for your chains buying one & getting one free,I don't think that was a good price for a 16 in.chain.My local saw shop used to run those sales too about 30 yrs.ago.I used to get 2 chains for $20 back then & they were 20 in.chains.Granted prices have gone up over the yrs.I can only say I've been to the saw shop to get a chain fitted for a saw only a couple times over the past 3 yrs.I buy most of my chains on eBay & I shop around. The key is to know how many drive links you need, what pitch,& what gauge you have too.
BTW,good luck on your online auction!

Cheapest price I found on EBay for .050, 3/8, 60 DL Stihl RS was $25 for one chain. I don’t use any cheap chain or anti kick back. Only use the most aggressive chain I can find, usually RS.
I’m still a little confused on the serial numbers. If you read left to right, the first saw was 4 73 390 310. So, as I read it, assembly line 4, year 73, day 390, unit 310. So, why would the second saw not read 4 assembly line, 00 year, 150 day, and unit 030. I would think since there are 365 days in the year, there would be 3 digits. Otherwise how do you know the difference between 15 and 150? I would think if the unit was 0030 that would push it out to a 9 digit number?
I’ve been busy running around and not keeping up with others projects. How’s the Remington with the Homelite kit coming?

Was that Whites Hardware, where you used to get your chains? My parents used to bowl with the Whites.

Joe,I believe you're supposed to read the serial # from right to left. The last 4 digits on the right tell how many units were made, the next 3 digits give what day of the yr.(015-Jan.15th),the next digit gives the yr.(0-1980 or 1990),& the last digit 4 would be the assembly line.Since Homelite was sold to John deere in 1994 it couldn't possibly have a build yr.of 2000. I keep forgetting that you're somewhat of a professional when it comes to chains & such & you worked for your dad's tree service.I wasn't aware that you were buying the aggressive chains. So I suppose you got a good deal on those chains after all.

Thanks Ed, that makes sense. Reading the number on the first saw from r to l, 473390310 would translate to: 0310 made 339th day 7 for 77 Assembly line 4 So, the two saws would be a 77 and probably an 80, only 3 years apart, that’s why they look almost identical. I’m no longer winning the bid at $1, it’s up to $11. I might go a little higher. I have 4 nice running XL12 series. I made my 15 bucks back on the one above yesterday. One of my firewood customers asked if I had any wood left, sorry no. Then I jokingly said I could come over and cut down one of their trees. She said that was her next question, they had a big, straight , dead locust on the edge of there field. The first 5 blocks of the truck were 20”, then it split into two leads 12 and 14 inch. The saw handled it all well.we split loaded half the wood on his truck and stacked the rest. He asked how much? I said for 2 1/2 hours a 100 bucks was good. Got home and looked in the envelope and they gave me $250.

Good job Joe! I had a similar situation almost 2 yrs.ago with my neighbor.I was in our local hardware store where he worked & he knew my son & I did tree cutting for our other neighbor & he asked me if I'd be interested in taking down a box elder for him that was close to the house.I told him that I'd take a look & evaluate the situation. There was only one limb that had to be tied off & my son was the tree monkey & I was on the ground pulling on the rope. The rest of the tree came down in sections without any problems.I hauled away all the brush, even raked up the twigs, leaves,& sawdust & hauled it away too. When I was finished I called his house & his ding-bat lady friend answered the phone.I told her that since I was done I'd like to get paid now.Her answer was "What,we owe you money"?I told her that normally I'd charge $200 for a job like that, but since her boyfriend helped me out at the hardware store all the time & made deliveries to me (the store doesn't have delivery service),I'd do it for half price of $100.Her boyfriend called me back later that day & said he needed to go to the bank to withdraw some money & he'd be by the next day to pay me.He did indeed stop by the next day & said "we'll split the difference" & handed me $150.I asked him if he was sure about it & he said not to worry about it & told me he was impressed with the work I did. I don't know if you've ever had the displeasure of working with box elder,or if it even grows down your way,but that stuff is a b*tch to split because it has a gnarly twisted grain,& it stinks when you burn it,but it heats like soft maple.I'm using it right now to heat during the day as it won't hold overnight.

Our Vet friend has a big one at her animal clinic. It’s dying back. She is in her mid 80’s and keeps saying she is going toe sell the clinic. I hope she sells out before it has to come down. The wood is sought after by turners, it has beautiful red streaks in it.

Maybe sought after by turners, but most certainly not me,Lol.A little story about box elder when I first moved to my house. It was the 2nd yr.& we had a helluva windstorm in June & took down my neighbor's box elder.I asked if I could get the wood & he told me to help myself. The wood was still green & I was on vacation & was going to split it by hand.(what a dumb ass I was back then,Lol) I did know enough to not expect to split the logs while sitting on the soft ground,so I stacked one on top of the other & began splitting. As long as I had good straight logs with no limbs coming off of them I was good.I got a stubborn one & I was using a sledge & wedge to split.I hit the wedge dead on & the log bounced right off the other one & landed right on my big toe.I bet I must've cusserd for 20 min.I couldn't walk right for at least 2 weeks.I figured I broke my big toe. There's nothing they can do for a broken big toe,so I just gimped along for about 2 weeks.I remember that like it was yesterday & that was well over 30 yrs.ago.

Yeah I've had that happen. Learned that some wood you would think the wedge was started and give it a good swing, and have the wedge shoot out like a cannon ball. Then I learned to jab the wedge in the ground and dig up a little dirt and rub that in the crack, it would give the wedge some traction and sticking power.
I lost the bid on the Super XL Auto. I won the bid on two 50 pound tractor weights for $48. I have to talk to the auction folks today when I pick them up. On the "on line" sales, at 2 minutes remaining, the "add to your bid" icon starts blinking. I had the winning bid at $26 for over a day. With about 3 hours left some one else went to $28. So, I was going to let it go. When the 2 minute light started blinking, I decided I wanted the 20" bar that was with it, and was going to up my bid to $35. I was locked out and couldn't bid. I was also bidding on an "AllNighter" wood stove for my cabin in WV. Same thing happened. I had the winning bid at $70 for two days. I also had a max bid in of $85. When the 2 minute light started to blink my $70 bid jumped over my $85 max, to $90, then $95, then $100. So, two other bidders were bidding. I was going to throw a $150 max bid on it, and again I was locked out. I've got to find out if it's something I'm missing or what. If it happens on a really good saw that I want, I'll be very upset.

I just put 2 bids in on a Remington PL7A,94cc saw.I've been wanting one for a while now & one finally came up on Feebay.Someone put a bid on it for $3.25,I jumped it to $50 with a max bid of $101.I might go a little higher, but I'm certainly not going up to $200,Lol.I know a couple guys on AS who have one. Sorry to hear you didn't get the one you were bidding on.

I'll do that too,but sometimes I get screwed by someone else's max bid.I figure to get the pussy-footing around out of the way,Lol.I pretty much know what the saw is worth & if someone thinks they're getting this one for $10 or $20 they're dead wrong.

I prefer to put bids in the last few seconds of a auction. I usually do that too. This sale has a "soft" bid. As long as people are bidding, they keep extending the cut off by 2 minutes. I've got to find out why I keep getting blocked out when the 2 minute warning comes on. It happened back in the fall when I was bidding on a John Deere X540 for my daughters house warming gift. When it went past my max bid, I couldn't up it more. Luckily others jumped in and started bidding, which extended the sale for 2 minutes, that gave me time to call the auction. I got the girl and she said I was clear to bid. At 30 seconds left I started yelling I wanted to bid and it wouldn't let me. She said what's your Max bid? I said $3750. She sat there the last few seconds counting down, then said, you got it for $3200 and something. I said it wasn't showing on my computer. She said she couldn't get a bid on my number either, so she put it on the Auction House's number. The two items I lost yesterday didn't break my heart, but if it had of been something like a 2100 or 3100, I'd be throwing a fit still.
