After cleaning my saw with a biodegradable cleaner my recoil starter quit working, not sure if the cleaning process has anything to this issue, or if it was just a coincidence. the spring is good the only issue is it does not engage with the cup not allowing the engine to turn over, If there is any information on how to repair or replace this starter please let me know.

If it's a Morse-Fairbanks starter, the friction washers probably didn't like the cleaner and getting wet. It may just need a little time to dry out or may need the friction washers cleaned out or something. As per their name, they need friction to cause the starter pawls to twist & bite into the cup. Anything soapy or oily will, well, un-gum up the works. You might try a quick squirt with carb cleaner to de-grease them. When I put them back together, if they are glazed or just not grabbing well, I sprinkle in a touch of powdered Pine Rosin. Helps them grab perfectly.
The friction washers would be inside this mechanism. (This one is from a C-5 but they all look pretty much the same).
As per the diagram furnished by Undee70ss. They are on each side of the pawl carrier.

Yes, the FM starters can be finicky sometimes. Did you tear the starter down before cleaning? If so possible a piece got put back incorrectly, they have to be assembled just right to function. Post up some pics of the starter mechanism if possible so we can take a look.

Like rowdy said, check the "sharp edges" shown in the picture jersey posted, they must be assembled correctly or you have no hope. The "sharp edges" can be sharpened carefully to help them engage the cup.

58970 is the most current part #. If chainsawlady doesn't have any in stock, I do.

I'm pretty sure they are supposed to have the flat sides, just like the shaft they are going over. If they are round now, they are probably worn that way.
