Ok this tainted saw I bought that I am very close to leaving aside as a parts saw or taking it to New Orleans for some voodoo to be done on it has yet another failure. Has anyone ever used JB weld for crankcase repair? I finally got the saw runnin and it runs good but I noticed it wasn’t oiling. I did not check it since I got it so I put some in it only to find it ran out on the ground almost as fast as I put it in. I found there to be a hole knocked in it right behind the bar plate between to two bar studs. It’s about half the length of the adjustment screw and about half as tall. I’m considering taking it down and putting JB weld in that but not sure that it would seal. Which I guess I could redkote the oil tank but then not sure that the saw is worth doing all that too. I might could just put it on the shelf and use it for parts OR as a lesson learned and a reminder of what’s out there

There was comment a while ago about that problem, something to do with incorrect assembly of the adjuster I think. Someone will know for sure.
JBing the tank should be fine. There is no pressure there. I would grind the paint away to bare metal and smear it on, as wide as possible so there is a lot of contact surface. You can trim it before it gets totally cured with a sharp knife and is still soft or grind it for clearance after a day or so.
Edit: I suppose you could put the JB on and mount the bar plate to be sure there will be clearance once the glue sets. Be careful not to plug up the oiler. Put some wax paper under the bar plate to keep it from sticking to the glue.

There is some other stuff out there but not sure what it’s called. One of the machinists at work (best in the world just ask him) has it. Something steel I think it’s a putty that hardens and is supposed to even be machinable in like an hour or so

Faster glue is nearly always weaker, slower is stronger. 5 minute repair is nice but waiting a day for an old chainsaw should be no big deal. I use both depending on what I am fixing. In this case I would use the slow stuff. JB makes one called 'Steel' too, there are many kinds. I would stay away from the putty type as it can be hard to get a liquid tight seal with that stuff. Just turn the broken place up and let gravity be your friend.

Well I bought it from a guy that hustles yards and yard work in the neighborhood as a “good running saw just needs a fuel line”. Turned out to need fuel line, it was actually missing a ring and piston was scored. I had a spare piston and cylinder but the cylinder wouldn’t work so had to use the old one and in that trial broke my spare ring. It was also missing a head gasket but I gathered all that kinda cheap to find it had a leaking fuel tank. I figured I would try red kote and it worked then today found the hole in the crankcase. All this was after the initial clean up which allowed me to find the social security number and last name etched in the starter cover which didn’t match the guy I bought it from. Then a call to rankin county SO ended up with a deputy in my garage telling me the SS number and name pulled up in Jackson and it likely was stolen but that unless it was gang violence or murder Jackson wouldn’t likely cooperate with stolen chainsaw that old it just wasn’t worth their time

And the deputy followed that up with saying the guy would likely come back to sell to me again OR with the intention of taking what I have and sell it elsewhere

Is it me or is there something off about that rear bar stud? I believe I was bamboozled on this one and if it was stolen I would venture to say the man that had it might be better off

And the deputy followed that up with saying the guy would likely come back to sell to me again OR with the intention of taking what I have and sell it elsewhere That's the MO of most thieves. They steal from the very people they sell too as well as others. I NEVER EVER buy any machine without a Serial Number or ID plate and I always ask the seller if I can run the numbers through the police database and get a copy of his photo ID. I usually take pictures of the person, vehicle, and tag if someone arrives at my house to buy or sell something. I make sure they know what I'm doing and tell them I want a list of people to visit if anything comes up missing. I'm not the Welcome Wagon.

Yea this is the model that had the lot number no serial number tag was in tack , one reason I bought it it was an older model with the black starter cover which I don’t have. The guy has been cutting yards around here for a long time there are actually some folks that recommend him(I certainly don’t). He’s been by here several times trying to rake leaves or weed eat for 20 bucks. When I took that tree down in my yard he offered to help for “a days pay” whatever that is. He of course has seen all my saws with my garage open and asked me to fix his roller once or twice. Sheriffs department knows him too apparently. I knew his name and where he lives with all that it just didn’t seem off till I found the social security number in the starter cover. Deputy said if it was stolen Jackson PD didn’t record it individually that the value was low and probably written up as just “chainsaw” if it was stolen. The way the guy hustles yard work he might have actually traded for it or something no way to really know. The deputy did mention that the guy was “into drugs” I didn’t ask anything else from there. Like I say lesson learned not really worried about him taking anything from me I’m well covered and I have to give it to Rankin county here they do solve burglaries and thefts here they don’t just focus on gangs and murders which are t really an issue around here either

We also have 6 security cameras that send live video straight to our phones and GSR. We live on a dead end road so both the wife an I spend a fair of time checking the cars that drive by the house to verify they are residents or visitors

That is a pretty big hole, I don't think I would try to repair that one. A patch would seem to be in order but likely more trouble than it is worth. There is not much room behind the adjuster for anything thicker than paint.

Do you remember the little piece out of my model 2000 air box, someone said they worked at a place and they used this industrial adhesive. I tried to contact the rep here in Oklahoma, but they would only sell in bulk. They even used it to repair shafts. Do you remember the name of that? Thanks
