I’ve read in several threads where guys mention lubricating the recoil. This is something I’ve never heard of much less done. I assume one should lubricate the spring but I may be wrong too. What should be lubricated and with what lubricant. Oh BTW that’s always my excuse when spilling bar oil when filling...”oh it’s good for it, it oils the saw good...they recommend it” 😂

I am not so sure who the "they" are that recommend lubing the outside of the saw... But if it makes you feel good, why not?

I use dry graphite on the recoil, after cleaning out all oil and debris. Most anything else seems to collect dirt and crud, gets sticky, messes with returning the rope.
I might have to try spilling some bar oil, that is one thing I have not tried regarding the recoil.

I've acquired all these older saws, some of them lying around for decades.I've had a few with the recoil rope stuck almost all the way out.I've found that just a few drops of WD40 around the spindle brought them all back to life. Now I only used a few drops,I didn't give it a bath.

My day job is navy nuclear instrumentation, we use neolube, a alcohol suspended graphite. Works great. I think any oil only causes dirt to cling to things causing more issues than nothing.
