There were 2 different oil systems on the little XL saws, the diaphragm regulated one and the pressure only one. Which one do you have? With the pressure only one, it has to have the oil restrictor by the oil pickup or it will way over oil like you are describing.

Go to this one and look at page B40 and look for the oiler section. There's an illustration there showing the sintered plug that releases pressure in the oil system to stop that and text that explains the pump and pressurized oilers that undee70ss has mentioned. www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/uploads/3/9/7/9/39792537/homelite_chainsaw_service_shop_manual_5th_edition__pages_1-96_.pdf

How can you determine which oil system a XL saw has that doesn't have a model number?

Hi, It is fairly easy to determine which oiling system the saw has. Look directly above and to the right of your clutch, if you see a 1.5" by .75" rectangular cover plate which is held on by three screws you have the diaphragm style oilier. If your saw does not have this cover plate you have the older cylinder vacuum only style oilier. I know, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I have included the link to one of Leon's repair videos which shows him repairing (i.e., misaligned gasket) the diaphragm style oilier starting at about 3:50 into the video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rarVjcYLtY

Thanks for your reply!! I have a older XL12 which is all metal construction. Were all the diaphragm type oilers like the one in the video. If so, mine must be the pressure type.

Hello again and sorry for this mix-up. My saw is a Supper XL Automatic, see attached photos, made in Canada.

Hi, I recommend you watch the video in the link below.. This video was made by Leon Crouch (i.e., House of Homelite Administrator/Owner) and it shows how the automatic oil pump system on the SXL-AO works and how to do maintenance on it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvfbLkKOm54Charlie

Thanks, I already watched it twice, his videos are awesome! I have yet powered up the saw. The previous owner who gave it to me stated that the oil comes out aggressively, but he is a lay person and perhaps and hopefully it's just like the video states. But there is also the possibility that while running it could leak from the oil tank gasket. I filled the oil tank up and there isn't any oil leakage.

First and easiest thing to check that fixes several of them is to pull the pickup strainer that's right behind the oil fill cap. Just unscrew and pull it out. Check for dirty pickup screen or no pickup screen at all. Dirty screen is as simple as cleaning it off. Missing screen entails taking everything apart and blowing sawdust out of all the passages and oil pump.

Thanks again, but wouldn't all that restrict the flow of oil? That's not my alleged problem?

Yes it would. Looks like I misunderstood your issue. I need to learn to read for content better it seems.

There have been some models of saws that could put out considerably more oil than necessary but a Super XL isn't one of them. About the only way to make one oil too much would be to modify the pump plunger.
I've never heard of a larger model oil pump fitting on a Super XL but I suppose maybe it's possible.

Like I told another poster, it may be coming out by the oil tank gasket when it's powered up?
