i just use a spark plug with the ground electrode removed. If spark can jump that gap, it's plenty to run.

I have a tester that is a spark plug with the side electrode removed and an alligater clip welded to the side of the shell. It does not work well with the short plug lead of a saw so I soldered a short length of wire between another clip and a bigger battery charger clip. The larger clip grabs the plug and of course you ground the smaller one. It works on just about anything and uses the original plug or the plug with no side electrode. Leaves both hands free to hold the saw and pull the rope.

Just have your wife hold the wire while you pull the rope. May only work 1 time.

I'm divorced. Didn't try it before we got divorced though. I teach Auto Tech at a Tech College on of my students held plug wires last year with the engine running. Not too bright

HEI lights up your life! Nothing like watching the light show from a worn out set of wires at night! You just don't want a nay fuel leaks from the carb at the same time....

I have in last year invested in the Briggs style tester, 7 bucks, cheaper than divorce, no one gets hurt, and easy to use. The spark is enclosed and safe, and stays put when clipped to a good ground
