My son-in-law just dropped off a couple saws for me to tinker with ...
One is a Super EZ Automatic with "two" lot numbers?
B7146 (line B, 1977, 146th day?) 104313 (unit or serial number?)
How do I interpret these?

Shoot! Scrape the grease away, dummy!Charlotte, NC Lot No = B7146 (lot# = Line B, May 26th, 1977) UT No = 104313 (model number)

Hi Lou, This is how I always interpreted this particular numbered combination; which for some reason differed from the common UT # and Serial # combination. I always confirm this date with the carburetor month/year stamping, which thankfully always exists per Walbro. So if you check that date, I'd be willing to bet it's either a very late 76 but more likely an early 77; provided no one has switched it. There's also the fuel tank instructions which have changed a few times over the years. I'm pretty sure this is the design from '77-'83. Cheers. Steve

Thanks Steve! Those starting instruction should come in handy ... after I clean her up. The rubber parts on this thing are in great shape ... son-in-law says this saw was in his Dads barn/shed. His Dad is 90 and had a dairy and walnut orchards. I'm hoping the top end isn't dead ... wish me luck!

Lou, I think it's on the jet side, you can't miss it though.

Lou, For example; here's a Super EZ that was made on April 29, 1980 with a March dated carb.

Thanks Steve, I'll pull that carb when the time comes ... I bought a new plug ... no spark ... took off the recoil cover (you can see in the picture above that the rope was gone/broke). Cleaned the armature and coil ... clearance at .015. Got spark! Then the recoil spring gave way ... that system looks worn out and nasty like the spring broke and someone bent it to make it grab the "spring lock". Looks like I need to refurb that part just to get the motor to turn over correctly.
Louie
PS: Just looked at the IPL ... I'm missing the outer shield ... bummer.

Guys ... Can anyone show me how the " Lock" holds onto the recoil " spring". I see the lock has a hook but Im not sure how that loop in the interior of the spring latches onto the lock ... Spring:Lock:

The spring is upside down in the pic...with everything installed, the pulley keeps the lock centered in the spring.

Steve, OK .. got that ... that little loop should engage the hook, securely?
Maybe because the previous owner had broken the spring, its all stretched out? Doesn't come close to the hook. Is it OK to bend the spring into a tighter loop?

You can try, but spring steel is very brittle. Usually you get it just about to the shape you want and SNAP! But you have nothing to lose at this point.

Try putting it together correctly and winding the rope a couple of turns, it should catch. I install the rope loosely with the handle tied on, then fish out a loop between the guide pin and the slot in the pulley. Wind up the spring and let the handle end turn as I go to relieve the twisting. You have to wind in the correct direction of course, I make that mistake now and then.

Thanks sweepleader ! I actually have the older style cap on the side plate with two screws ... I can remove them and wind up the spring from the outside. I do have an update: The spring lock tip is no longer a hook shape but flat ... so it can't hold the spring ... even a new spring. Back to re-roofing my Dads house ... I'll have time later on ... maybe this weekend ... to try to "jury" rig it. If not, Leon will be getting an order! Louie

Saw Gang, Update ... Dads roof is done, whew! Rain, rain, rain ... please God let it rain! Supercharged86 (Steve!) The saw carb has 3/77 stamped on it ... and after I started cleaning it ... its a little more orange than my SXLAO (1981). Got the spring and lock working ... the plastic bushing needed some shim so the rope pulley wouldn't rub on the casing ... if this saw starts, I'll replace all the inerds but for now ... she has fire, and I can spin the engine without a plug. Next is fuel ...

Next is fuel ... Hey Lou, Just as I expected, early '77 carb, so the rest of the date checks out. Glad to hear your making progress. I've always kept the factory cast aluminum fuel filter support and used the Oregon felt replacements. Along with Tygon fuel line (for both fuel and oil, including the short piece inside the tank for the manual pump). Steve

Thanks Steve! ( Supercharged86) I have 3 feet of Tygon line. There's an Oregon felt air cleaner replacement? Part #? Do you have an operators/owners manual? It's for a few saws from that time frame ... 23754 is the part number. I have one of Leon's IPL's so I'm good there.
