Has anyone ever had any experience with a older homelite XLBC-4 brush cutter. I have three of them. They are a beast of a machine. Diffently old school. I am having trouble getting them to run. It has been at least twenty years since they were used. I am working on one at a time. I have put an new coil on with new points and condenser. Have perfect fire. I have taken carb off and apart and cleaned thoughly. There isn't much in those carbs. I can get saw to run for just a second and it dies. I have cleaned filter in tank, and have ordered a new fuel line. I can get it to run just a little bit if I throttle the choke on it. I have high and low set screws backed off one full turn to see if I could get it to run so I could fine tune. Anyone got any ideas on what else to check on it. I don't have anyway to check compression yet. Anyone every run across or use this type of saw over the years? Im new on here and hope I posted in the correct forum. Any feedback appreciated. UT no. 15030, Serial No. 91553583 the carb is a tillotson- borg warner, HS-109a will any other carb fit it?

I have three of these units myself. They are big and heavy and I love them. Hard to say what might be wrong with your machine but you did not say if you put in a carb kit. The carbs are simple but subject to diaphragm and gasket deterioration over the years. That is one of the first things I do if a motor will not run. Compression, reeds and crank seals are all areas to look at. Parts are the same as the chainsaws and plentiful on line, use the carb number to find a kit. There is a screen in there that plugs with slime from ethanol laced fuel, most kits come with a new one. Be sure the gasket and diaphragm are stacked right. Get an ipl, illustrated parts list, for part numbers. Good luck, Dan

I checked the compression it had around 95psi. I say I need to rebuild. I checked the piston looking through the muffler port. Looks pretty scored. What all would you replace? I have a new homelite piston, and cylinder. What else would you look to get thanks for the reply.

Rebuilt the saw new piston rings, new cylinder, carb kit, it runs like a new one. Starts on the first pull. New coil, new points and condenser. Anyone know whats the best gas mix ratio for these saws?

I think the original mix was 16:1, just like the saws from that era. Newer oils now, I run 32:1 in everything, even 40:1 engines, so I only have one mix on hand. Don't have anything new enough to worry about 50:1.
