Model 10499B / Serial 4D2220133
Okay so the saw would not good at high speed or WOT and would smoke and stall out. So I figured given the age I would order a rebuild kit for the carb.
So I changed the gaskets and diaphragm and am trying to tune the saw. This saw has the SDC carb.
If I start at the beginning (one turn out from closed on both H & L) I can get the saw to run but if you pull in the trigger it will bog down and quit. So if I adjust the L out to the point that I can go full throttle the saw idles terribly. This is my first time ever fooling with carb adjustments so I am not trying to say I know what I am doing, but clearly I am doing something wrong.
I looked up online how to adjust and am following that procedure - just not having any luck doing it. In different adjustments I can get the saw to high throttle good no smoke, or can make it smoke a lot. But I cannot get the setting that gives me full power and good idle.
Your suggestions / comments would be really appreciated.

Your procedure sounds good...it sounds like the high speed orifice may be plugged. You can try to clean it with a small, stiff wire through the carburetor bore. Other ideas: have you checked the compression of the saw? Also, could be symptoms of worn crank seals.

Fuel mix ratio correct? Fresh, non ethanol fuel? Proper air cooled 2 cycle oil?

Metering diaphragm stacked properly? Carb body, gasket, diaphragm, cover.

I will get back after this in a couple days, but much too busy the last couple days. I am leaning towards crank seals, if I remember right if you tip it on its side to cut it smokes worse the upright. Going to be cutting firewood and fence posts soon now that it cooled off again. Might just be time to trade it in for the Jonsered that I have been eyeballing....
