Was a given a xl model number 10696 that's in good shape. The problem is it won't stay running for longer then a few seconds after start up. The chainsaw will start after a few pulls, accelerate(rev) very high then die, with out me touching anything. Ie choke, throttle lever etc. It will then be very difficult to start if at all, and gas will drip from around the muffler. I have replaced the plug, fuel lines, oil lines, and cleaned the carb which was gumed up pretty good, and cleaned the muffler screen. The air filter is nasty but doesn't effect operation when partially removed. Should I buy a carb kit or does this sound like an air leak from around the piston? Thank you in advance, I am very frustrated.

Tribulation, thank you for your response. Upon my second disassembly I realized that the on/off kill switch wires were rubbing against the fly wheel shorting it out. I re insulated the wires and now all is well. My new $5 yard sale saw cuts quite nicely.

One more question I forgot to ask. Is there supposed to be a foam gasket in between the carb and the black squarish air filter housing? It doesn't seem to sit flush and would allow air to bypass the filter and go right into where the butterfly valve is. I sort of stuffed a piece of a paper towel in the gap.

Darn I'm missing the gasket, it's hard to start and will often flood during my attempt.
