Hello again guys, Just trying to add to my limited scope of information about Homelite saws. Where does a XL 400 AO come into the mix? Is it a bored out Super XL or a much larger Super EZ? Does anyone know if there is a chronological listing of Homelite saws? And if so where can it be found? I am new to the board, but I am glad I found you guys. I only have 3 saws, a red Super EZ that I purchased new in 1972 and two Super XLAO's that I recently acquired. They all run great and do one heckuva job on trees. Along the information line, does anyone have any opinions about Randy who sells Homelite parts on ebay? Thanks, BigGreen

Hay BigGreen, and welcome aboard!!!! The XL-400 was based on the XL/Super XL series. Mr Acres site indicates they ended production in 1972, but doesn't say the year they were introduced. The XL-400 had a longer stroke crank as well as a bigger bore. Most obvious external difference was a unique starter cover. There was also an XL-500 that used the same stroke, but with an even larger bore than the XL-400. These saws have always been a bit of a mystery to me, as there aren't that many around and I've always pondered the niche that Homelite was trying to fit by making these saws.
As for Randy... well I've been told that if ya don't have anything nice to say about someone, you should keep silent, so I guess I won't say anything.

To be honest I've always wanted to find a decent XL-500, I like the idea of even more power in the same general size as a Super XL.
To add to what Dan didnt say about Randy, I have never directly dealt with him but just based on his prices I would check with lawnmowertech37, edgeandengine, or even rbw often has parts. I can personally say I've dealt with all three and they will most likely be able to hook you up with parts for less than the other guys.

biggreen, I lucked out at an auction last fall and went home with a very little used XL-400 that was in super shape. I had no knowledge of these saws and found out they were just over 65cc's. It had been in my shed until a couple of weeks ago when I got the urge to see if it ran. It was the best $30 I have spent. The compression of this saw will yank your shoulder out of joint if you don't use the release Even came with a Smokey Bear bar cover! A good weight to power ratio for an old saw!
