My name was mentioned today in a post regarding high Ebay prices, in particular, for a new gas cap offer I made. I’m posting my reply here because the Hardware Store seems like a better place to talk about prices.
I’m glad this subject came up because I’ve wanted to say something about eBay prices for a while now.
First, let’s take a look at my offer. New #69500 gas cap, $19.50, shipped, with a new cj-6 plug. Take out $2 for the plug, $3 for shipping and 50 cents for the padded envelope to ship it in and the price of the cap is $14. That’s less than half what some others are selling them for on ebay.
Second, ridiculous prices on ebay? You bet! I’m as frustrated as anyone about it. I’ve listed my parts on ebay at lower prices than others. The result? Many of the parts I’ve sold have been bought by other sellers within 24 hours of listing. A week or so after I ship the parts I see them selling the same parts at 50% - 100% more.
I’d seen the high prices on ebay before I bought these parts last year. There are a few sellers in particular whose prices are absurd. So, after I got these parts I looked forward to getting them into the hands of other Homelite owners at reasonable prices. I was dumb enough to think that all I’d have to do was list them for lower prices. Wrong.
I hadn’t sold anything on ebay until last December when I started to list these parts. I’ve learned a few things since then.
I’ve made it clear on HoH that I have these parts for sale, and, the few times anyone has asked, I’ve sold the parts for less than ebay prices, just like the gas cap above. I intend to keep on doing that.
But I don’t need to sell them to enjoy these old Homelite chainsaws. If I can help someone get a part they need, great. Otherwise, I’ll be glad to keep them, use them for my own projects and pass on whatever is left to my kids and grandkids.
I don’t know what the solution to the eBay situation is. If I list the parts low, they get bought up and relisted at higher prices. If I list them high, then I’m just like the others. If I quit listing them, then someone might not get a part they need.
Not every Homelite owner comes to HoH, or even knows it’s here. Those who have managed to buy parts from me that haven’t been bought up by the resellers have expressed their appreciation. Some have even become friends.
Thanks for taking the time to hear my side of it. Sorry for the long story, but, as you probably already know, I tend to be wordier than most.
