OK, so you can probably tell by now that I like these guns. I wanted to pick one up cheap so I could use it as a test mule so to speak for trying out different mods to see what works best. I initially planned on just using it as a beater to get a decent baseline of these guns in stock form and then use to mount different modified components to in order to save wear/tear on my nicer frames. These gun frames are made out of pot metal and don't stand up to constant assembly/disassembly very well, that plus I didn't want to bitch up the finish on my better specimens.
What I got here was more of a basket case than I bargained for, the poor thing looks like someone used it for a hammer!! I have no idea what they were thinking, but whoever worked on this and tried to "Fix" it fell far short. I knew the gun was ratty looking when I bought it, but the appearance didn't really mean much to me, and I already had it most of the way apart when I realized how bad it was.
I began taking pics for this thread when the gun was about halfway apart.
The first thing I noticed wrong with this sad thing was that the safety was totally ineffective whether the gun was cocked or not. It didn't matter what position the safety was in, the gun would fire.....Well, OK, you could still pull the trigger and trip the seer, the gun was a long way from "Firing". So I began to disassemble it and it just plain old didn't want to come apart.
These guns can be rather tricky to get apart in the first place as their constructed like.......Well, like a gun, meaning there not held together solely by screws like many co2/air guns. With this design there is one screw and a hidden tube that holds it together. The tube is supposed to slide out the front of the gun once the adjuster retaining screw is removed, its the big screw underneath the muzzle. Take out the screw and the tube is supposed to come out with a minimal amount of coaxing.
With this one I had to beat the gun on a wooden block to get the tube out. Now, I have heard of people getting frustrated and breaking off the front of the lower frame, but what I found the problem to be boggled my mind.
The front portion of the lower frame is bent upward!! Heres some pics with a straight edge held up to it showing the amount of bend it had, about a 3/16" gap in the middle.
Now OK, Ive seen people damage things before, but this? This I just cant figure out. Its like someone was trying to reassemble the gun while simultaneously falling down a flight of stairs. So I now understand why the safety wouldn't work, the hammer is just floating around in all the extra space caused by the bent frame, so, OK Ill fix it.
Just have to get the valve body out and press the frame back into alignment and.......WTH?? Someone hammered the tops of the frame rails over the sides of the valve!!!!!!!
Why the hell would someone do this?
Look.
If you look at the corners of the rails where they meet the rest of the frame you can see how distorted things are. They had to have taken a hammer and peened over the rails that the valve is supposed to slip nicely between, But Why? Well, After gently prying out the frame rails I found out why.
To be continued.
