I have always wanted another blue Homelite and found a non running 101 the other day at a garage sale for a great price. I have never worked on a 101 but it appears pretty simple.....Is it worth fixing or do I have a "parts" saw ? I need another mid-size saw like I need a hole in the head but something about that blue

The XL-101 was the first of the "lighter than the XL-12" saws. It has the same size engine as the XL-12 but a pound or so lighter. The only issue that I can remember is that the early 101's has a glued together gas tank and guess what - yes they started leaking. Look and see if there are some screws going between the two tank halves. You will see them if they are there. The original muffler was not much and if it has that installed, it will be loud. The only drawback for a working saw is the manual oiler and a not to big gas tank. If all the pieces are there and the thing has compression, fix it up

Thank you for the history Craig. If the tank is leaking, do you seal it the same way as the SXL tank.....split and re-seal with Perma-Tex ? Sounds like the saw is worth repairing...I will see if I can "Git er done".

Glued together tank means no screws so they cannot be fixed unless you want to try and glue it back together with JB Weld. Homelite warrantied all the glued together tanks if they leaked by providing a new screwed together tank but the customer had to foot the bill for labor.

So I guess the first order of business here is to put gas in the tank and check for leaks....rather than try to get the saw running.

The 101 was the first saw I ever bought, I was in high school. Cost about 100.00 back in '68. I bought one a few years ago just for memories, and really like it. The mufflers from the 102, 103 are much better, get one if you get it running. The one that came on this 101 actually caused pain in my right ear. The manual oiler in the winter isn't fun, but using ATF or hyd. oil solved that problem. Chisel chain, mine would outcut the 028 I had.

There is an XL-101 on ebay that I think has a glued together gas tank. It isn't the best picture but I don't see the tell tail bumps that are in the second picture - my XL-101. Glued tank: Screwed together tank:

You must need to "tweak" it a little Mike ! Get a few more rpm's out of it. That muffler, or poor excuse for one - Just awful. Reminds me of the Mac 10-10 my cousin had, we'd be cutting together, I couldn't hear my 041 over the sound of that Mac. Ouch.

Yea, can't speak about the 101 with its 3.3 engine, but the 123 and others around here cut very strongly. If you're SEZ feels as strong, then sumthin's most probably not quite right.

Muffler or exhaust deflector The 101 is 3.3 cu in where the SEZ is 2.5 cu in. The SEZ is a higher RPM engine but still, the 101 should at least be comparable to the SEZ.

Get yourself a pair of muffs. Even saws with decent mufflers are still loud. What about the 4-20?

Some Homelites have that brain cell vibrating pitch, yeah they are loud, but it's the quality of the sound that hurts. My McCullochs never really bothered me, some Homelites made the very air shimmer with shock waves of noise.

Joyce e-mailed me today and has a 102 muffler that will make it quiet as a sewing machine TIP: When it's pop-a-top time.....fire up the 101. Runs everyone out of the shop and away from fridge. ;D
