Interesting reading. Looks like the whole Dec 1978 Popular Science magazine is online. There is even a Smokey Yunick column If you scroll down past the Homelite story you will see an XL-12 - SXLAO clone being advertised by a company call c.o.m.b. This company was one of the accounts I used to service and they eventually turned into one of the shopping channels - I think it is QVC. This saw is manufactured by American Power Equipment Company. I've seen these on craigslist being sold as a Homelite In 1973 this list price for a SXLAO was $209.99 and the XL-12 $189.99

I may as well chain this to the tread too. books.google.com/books?id=xywDAAAAMBAJ&printsec=frontcover&lr=&rview=1#v=onepage&q=&f=falseThis is the March 1953 Popular Science. Click Content and scroll to How to use a chain sawWho knows what brand of saw is being used for this article? It looks like all the Popular Science magazine way back to May 1926 have been scanned and place online. There are 33 pages with 30 Popular Science covers per page. That's 990 issues. You can search all issues for Homelite.

I did some more snooping on google and found some info. Homelite sponsored cutting tournaments in the very late 70's and early 80's. There was prize money involved.
I have not seen anything beyond 1981. A fellow from Washington or Oregon was the guy to beat at the time.
I now think the 650 and 750 came to be because of these tourneys and unfortunately the company was sold about that time and the rest is history.
So, lets hope history repeats itself and this company once again becomes and AMERICAN COMPANY and we set the standard not try and find something that lives up to it.

The Tournament of Kings was a competition event held for about 5 years in Charlotte, NC at the Carrowins Theme Park. It brought in some of the best loggers in the nation. There was 8-10 events I cant remember for sure including felling closest to a stake, timed cuts, and a few other events I cant remember. I think the best one was all contestants used a 360 to make 10 cuts in a 12 inch log under time but the trick was the winner had to have to smallest stack of 10 disks and they had to be the full disk. They used 360's, 550's and 750's. If I could scan pictures I could post some of the event from 1979.

Thanks Homeliteman, I'm betting you could have those photos scanned by someone like Staples or even CVS and they could put them on disk. Then you could have the scaned files on disk and post them here for all to see.
good luck with that........John ...would love to see them great history

The tournament of Kings was a invite only You had to win I believe or place in the top three to get an invite I've actually got some old tournament of king stuff stored at my mom's house My dad was a factory rep for homelite from like 77 until John Deere bought them and changed the way they wanted it operated. Basically it has become sort of the Stihl timbersports championship I was never able to go to the tournament at Kings but I went to a couple of the qualifiers and one of the saws that I own that is in pieces actually set a world's record that stood for a long time and I plan on completely rebuilding it but Even the qualifiers were awesome
