While going over my new-to-me 101, I noticed on the clutch side, a tube of some sort placed in the gap between the crankcase and fuel tank. It started just shy of the cylinder base, wrapped up and around, terminating just behind the carb mount, then tucked into a small space there. It was then covered in a black tar-like substance that was brushed on and had hardened long ago. I looked at the IPL supplied on Leon's site and couldn't find anything that matched. I removed it and it looks like a neoprene tube. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?

It was meant to be there. It was that way from Homelite. A new replacement tank/crankcase has it too.

I don't think it was offered as a replacement part. It comes on the gas tank/crank case assembly. I've got a new tank/case assembly and it's on there.

I have two theories that are completely uninformed, just WAG's.
1) Homelite thought there'd be enough air movement from the flywheel to keep sawdust & oil from coming through the air passage. When that wasn't the case, something had to be added to bridge the gap that wouldn't transfer too much crankcase heat to the fuel tank.
2) The space was needed for the casting process due to the complexity of the tank/crankcase assembly and was then filled with the neoprene/rubber/tar after machine work was done.
