I just bought an XL-12 with a serial # 44538617.This may shed some light on the matter - it has a Lot # instead of a UT# - D6078.Can this saw be dated?
I just found a post from a couple yrs.ago & I believe my newest XL-12 was made on the 78th day of 1976.Correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe this saw will be a points & condenser saw as the electronic ignition modules didn't come out till a couple yrs.later.I should get it either Sat.or early next week.

This little bugger is becoming quite a challenge.I pulled the points out & cleaned them up,they were burnt beyond recognition.I al;so pulled the stator assembly off for cleaning under it.In the process of putting it all back together I didn't see that the points wire that comes from the coil to the plastic points block had gotten pinched under the stator plate & I tightened the screw down. The result was the wire got cut.I tried several different times to scrape the insulation off that wire to splice it,but with heat & age the wire is brittle & just keeps breaking.I found another Wico stator assembly & transferred the points into it & put it on the saw,but it won't lay on the engine flush.I put it together with the flywheel on & it has spark, but I'm worried that the stator assembly may come loose & destroy or damage the saw.I believe that stator assem, bly came off an old blue & white SXL.There's at least 1/4 in.gap between the stator assembly & the engine.

Good news about the stator plate assembly - I pulled the ignition system apart again, only partially,& found that when I tightened down the mounting screws it must've sucked the assembly down flush to the engine.I'd forgotten to lube the felt for the points cam,so it wasn't a wasted effort. I put in a new fuel line & filter & now I have to wait to get the carb back to install that. The carb is an SDC48 & it won't hold pressure at all.

Here I am a month later & have good news.I got a carb fixed (thanks Leon!) & now it holds pressure.I put a Zama carb on & fueled it up.I pulled it over 15 times, that's my limit,& then primed it.It took right off after the prime.I guess I had the needles set spot on at 1 1/4 turns out on both.Damn nice running saw! I need to finish up on it - put the choke rod on,put the needle grommet back in,& hunt up a 16 in.chain that fits.I'll get pics on here after it's complete.

I finished up on the little fella today.I looked in the box that I had the saw in & there was a chain there that came with the saw.I don't think it's the correct chain for the saw though,it's a low profile chain.I've never seen a LP chain on an XL-12.Here are some pics as promised.
