I've collected homelite saws for over 15 plus years. I understand that saws with 6 and 7 digit serial numbers can only be approximately dated by chainsawladys sales records. Bless her and R.I.P. I also get how to read the newer 9 digit numbers from the bulletins on here. For some reason, I missed something on decoding the 8 digit numbers. Any help is appreciated. Ron Attachments:

8 digit read the same as 9 digits, except for the first digit.

Isn't that February 3, 1980? No, 1970! I was actually arguing with myself on that one. But I didn't think an EZ would have been red in 1970 so I was guessing, and it was purely a guess, that it was 1980.
So on that note, the letters didn't start designating years until 1981, correct? C was 1981. So if 0 was for 1970, what character designated 1980?
This is why I usually steer clear of decoding serial numbers!

I spent some time scrolling through Chainsawladys records. It looks to me like homelite started putting 8 digit serial numbers on ez and ez automatics in 1969 but other models still used a 7 digit number. What gets really confusing is there are several ez's in her records that have 6 digit numbers. Maybe a typing error?

So I'm still confused. Reading the Serial Numbers TSB, I still come up with 1980. What am I missing?

They also sold used saws which accounts for some earlier saws sold at later dates.

So I'm still confused. Reading the Serial Numbers TSB, I still come up with 1980. What am I missing? It’s a 8 digit serial number which were not used in 1980. Exactly. "0" represents 1980 only in a nine character/digit serial number. Example: UT:10045A ( Super XL-AO ) SN:402180280 .. DOM: Tuesday - August 5th - 1980 "A-B" characters were mostly used on Terry built saws.

So I think I'm finally getting this (kinda). A serial number starting with a 0 or 1 that has 8 digits is a 70 or 71 and if it has nine digits it an 80 or 81. Thanks for the help guys!
