Hi all. I picked the SXL at my local secondhand store a while back, and the next time I went back the XL Auto was sitting in its place. Sadly, a third one didn't pop up after.
Anyways, I know next to nothing about these saws, I gather they're pretty common models. I think I have serial numbers decoded The SXL is UT: 10045C Ser: HL0021081 (1990?) The XL UT: 104444 Ser: 780890535 (I think this means 1978 - March 30th #535 made that day). But I'm not sure what this means for the part lists.
Suggestions where to start would be nice, the SXL almost starts throwing a lot of smoke but dies before you could reach the choke. The idle speed screw seems stuck. Haven't tried the little one yet.

The Super XL is probably burning oil out of the fuel system. If a saw sits for quite some time, the gas evaporates out and just leaves mostly oil. If you have fresh fuel in the tank and keep trying it and run it for a while, it'll likely clean up. Those idle screws can turn pretty hard but I'd get on it with a big screwdriver that you can get a grip and lean on it. It should break free.

Something else to keep in mind is the spark plug may need to be either cleaned or replaced. The oil residue may be fouling it out which will keep it from starting. The carb may also need to be taken out & at least cleaned if not rebuilt after sitting for a long time.
