I got a pioneer 1074 without a carb. put a carburetor and a couple other missing parts on it. about 7 pulls and it was going! and it ran good! But it wouldn't idle, a little bit of fiddling with it and I could sort-of get it to idle, turn it over on either side and it would die out almost immediately. Next day it will only run on a prime, it still has spark, and Good compression, But isn't getting fuel to the carb. It seems to me like a crank seal problem, but i would like a second opinion of course.

I think you may have more than one problem. All things are pointing to bad crank seals, but those being bad wouldn't prevent the carb from not pulling fuel.I'd have to say that there's a carb or fuel delivery issue too.Did you rebuild the carb?If so,did you pressure test it?How about a new fuel filter?

I have no means of pressure testing, I was thinking it was a carb problem too, the carburetor is rebuilt. The filter looked ok on the line and the line was nice and soft. could be some fines that got past or a clogged filter. I will look tomorrow and check back. The bad crank seals are most definitely not helping with fuel delivery, but those can't stop fuel from get to the carb entirely

If a seal is bad enough, like the rubber is gone, you'll have no crankcase pulse which is what enables the carb to pump fuel from the tank. The alternating crankcase pulse is what operates the fuel pump diaphragm.

When i pulled the fuel line off fuel came shooting out of the line, took the carb off and sure enough, Fuel inlet screen was plugged, I cleaned that up and about 7 pulls later it started popping, now i flooded the crap out of it. Thanks guys for the help!

The only problem i am having now is the air filter. this one didn't come with one, and they are impossible to find. one came on an ebay auction about 4 months ago, sold for $75 cad. pioneer part number: 431227
I cut with it a little and it runs good!

In the past I've made a couple air filters with an old sock and a hot glue gun. It wasn't perfect by any stretch, but it was way better than running without a filter at all.

For that kinda money though it may be worth buying a complete parts saw. There are quite a few of those saws on eBay that are missing air filters. I feel your pain.

Have you tried Rottman sales?I think they're in Wi.I just tried Parrish Implements & he says he's supposed to have them, but he can't open the storage facility they're in.I know Bob Johnson had them too,but he won't get rid of his Pioneer parts.

Thanks Ed! i haven't heard of those places before, i will hit them up when i have some time. I actually want to sell this saw when it's complete and put the funds toward a P38, P41, P51 or farmsaw.we will see what happens

I had the privilege of using a buddy's P51 a couple times. That saw was a ton of fun to operate!

Ed, is Bob doing business after his stroke? He sold me a set of rings for my 700D and said they were the last set in the world. He charged me the price pencil written on the box, $7.50.
