This may sound real basic forgive me my xl was running great,I left it in the case by the barn in the rain the case did not keep out the water it was filled but short of the fuel and oil caps, I emptied the tank no water in the fuel, but refilled with canned fresh 40.1,before that I removed the flywheel and dried the points ,brushed them out, then cleaned them with q- tips and 90% alcohol and dried them and blew them out put it back together it has good spark but the thing will not fire ,pardon me ,it does spark , it just won’t start,I pulled the plug cranked to blow everything out replaced it but no start still ,I suppose the only thing now is to pull the carb and dry it out or is there something I’ve overlooked,it was just rebuilt and there is no water in the gas in the tank.

Seems like it should fire if it still have spark and didn't get water in the fuel. I'd pull the spark plug out, dump a little fuel mix in the hole, reinstall the plug and give a rip. If it still doesn't fire, put a new spark plug in it. If it's got fire, fuel you dumped in and a good plug and still won't kick over, you've got problems.
Edit: Just hit me that you said you pulled the flywheel. How sure are you that you got the crankshaft key back in the flywheel keyway? You could pull it back off and if you see 2 "keyways" in it now, you've found your problem. Only reason I mention this is that years ago when I was in the Homelite shop, I did that once. After that I was much more careful when reinstalling flywheels.

I've got a couple truck saws that have sat on the back of my truck, uncovered, for 20 plus years. They get rained on, completely covered in snow, and still start. Unless water got in the fuel, I don't think you have a water problem. I'd check the above suggestions. When I get a new old saw, I put a little squirt of mix in the carb and it kind of floods it, so it may take 6-10 pulls but, if they have spark they fire. That will tell you pretty quick if it's a fuel problem. Unless, there is a big timing problem, as suggested above?
