Hi, this trusty saw has been used in a haunted hayride for 10 years, and I have went through about 5 different recoil spring replacements and none fit(they all seem to have too big of a knob to catch the whirlygig in the middle. Serial plate says Homelite TEXTRON Lot no. BZ164 UT no. 104313.

Any pics of the serial number data plate? Never seen a Lot number with 2 letters. Going by the UT number your saw is a super ez.

The 65107 spring is what I tried first before a few other ones, it looks different than the one that was in it and doesn't work. I'm not sure if I need to modify it or what, I'll take pictures tomorrow and show you what I mean, but I'm stumped.

Those springs can be challenging to get them in right & have the little "catch" hook onto the spring when you put the cover on.I had one here 2 yrs.ago that aggravated me to no end.I set it aside for a whole yr,.,came back to it last winter & finally got it.I know you don't have the leisure to do what I did.

I can get the spring in relatively easily, the problem is the old spring is physically different than any of the replacements. The loop on the end is too big, and the actual spring isn't "wound" tight enough or small enough to catch the little knob, I can put the spring in, and the half moon knob can spin freely because the knob isn't even close to touching the spring, and even if it did the loop is too large for the knob...

If the knob will catch on the end of the spring before you try putting the spring in,then you can use a needle nose pliers to bend the spring to conform to fit.Therer should be plenty of tension on the spring to work.Don't forget that when you put it back together you have to retension the spring, then put the screws in that hold the cap on.

Its not even close to catching the knob, and too big compared to the old one to catch it

Not all 65107 springs are created equal, seems the aftermarket ones are more miss than hit. Have a look at this genuine Homelite in the package one. I think it will work. www.ebay.com/itm/304851006671

I dont like leaving threads unfinished, just so someone in the future reading this knows, the aftermarket ones are all different but the actual homelite replacement spring dropped right in and works perfectly, thanks again for your help!
