I installed a new starter rope and it came with a new starter rope bushing (#5 in the IPL). I am assuming that this bushing gets pressed into the starter recoil cover?? But I attempted to press the bushing into the recoil cover housing but in my case its such a tight fit that the bushing keeps flinging out once I begin to almost get it seated. Is this the correct location for the bushing as I could not imagine any other location for it?

Hi, The picture attached shows there is already a bushing installed. Unless the existing one is somehow damaged, why replace it? If you do want to replace it for whatever reason, the old one needs to come out first (good luck). These bushings are press-fit-in and given the location, it will be darn hard to get it out without damaging the cover.

Some heat and a well sized socket or drill bit would likely be your best friend here. As suggested though…if it’s not broke .Don’t fix it.

Hi MTN,
As previously said, the bushing is already installed in the starter cover and you really shouldn't try to remove it. Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me.....the white plastic bushing you have hanging on the rope is much smaller than the already installed bushing, which is made of metal. So removing the old bushing and replacing it with the smaller plastic bushing isn't going to end well. Also, the plastic bushing hanging on the rope is on the rope backwards. You'd want the radiused side facing outward to stop the rope from fraying as you pulled it. Looking at the IPL it says that bushing is PN 67177. Looking at that part online it's obvious it's not the white plastic bushing you have hanging from your rope. If it came with the rope, and it's an OEM Homelite rope (PN 58806) it must be for a latter saw application that used the faster wearing plastic bushing. The IPL doesn't show it coming with the rope, which makes sense because those bushings never wear out and are pressed into the starter cover. So.....I tend to think the white plastic bushing on the rope is for another application, but of course could be wrong.

Thanks for the info! It clears up the question I had. I was confused because the starter rope is a OEM Homelite rope that the bushing came on so I thought it was supposed to press into the starter rope housing (where the metal bushing is already) But like you said it must be for another application. I am gong to opt for removing the bushing off the rope and keep it how it already is. The metal bushing does not show much of any wear as it is.

Models that use the same size #5 starter rope and washer/bushing, Super XL, 750, etc. The 93862 Nylon-Washer is positioned in the starter pulley under the rope knot.
See IPL's for clarity.
