Want to buy a carb for a Homelite XLA115 Military generator, PN is a Tillotson HS40A, No low adjustment. Before i got it, someone blew the back of the high adjustment out with what i believe is the wrong needle. All i need is a good carb body and needle. I'm trying to get it to work with a XL12 carb today, but id really like to have the original carb, if one can be found.

Well I ditched the XL12 carb and used the old HS40A With the messed up body. I got it going, but I’d really like a new carb. Turns out it doesn’t pull hard enough through the wider Venturi to pull start with the XL12 Carb. Had to choke it and start it with a drill (yep, I got that tired of pulling it).
Runs good with the old carb, but, I’d still like a new one.

I wonder if one from a XL water pump would be the same? There were probably more pumps made than generators.

I didn’t think about that, but I just looked one up for a XLS Carb PN is 59535-B, Tillotson HS-5-C and it looks like it has the large Venturi. When I say this HS40 is tiny, it’s VERY tiny. It starts WOT and governs down to 4000 rpm, I have to assume that’s the reason for the small Venturi. Not to mention, every-time I start it, it HAS to be choked to start, even if it’s just been shut off, just so it sucks through the intake hard enough. Thing runs like a top once it starts, 2 pulls with choke on cold, one pull with choke on warm. It was beating me to death not being able to start it with a regular XL12 carb. I’ve checked it’s compression, very good, the reed seals great, no intake or crank leaks, the only reason it wouldn’t start by hand was that large Venturi.
