i made the mistake of going to another estate sale this weekend. At the sale there was probably 75 - 100 chainsaws in various states of disrepair / neglect. Mostly they were various Poulan / Craftsman home owner grade plastic saws that i gladly stepped over. (Never seen that many "wild things" in one place) There was about 10 Homelites that i saw, most were XL single trigger plastic cased ones which looked like they had been well used and not worth the effort (i have done enough of these saws already and after one particular one with an oil diaphram issue that is still not solved, i walk by these as well)
In the pile was two 330's covered with 20 years of dust. Both had the original 20" bars with chains on them. Having done two 330's about 4 years ago i remembered how frustrating they are to disassemble for the terrible intake boot, i wanted so bad to walk by those as well........But the bars were calling me because they would go right on my SXL's / XL12's.
i asked the sales person a price for the 330's, and he said $25 for both. In my mind i said that is fair and began to look around at all of the other stuff there to start a pile. I found a late model plastic "Little Red" with a bar that barely had a scratch on it and about 12 loops of Oregon 72 chain. My pile got bigger and only cost me $45.
Getting the load home, i began inspection. Both 330's had spark, pistons and cylinders were perfect, one was missing the recoil, other was missing the carb cover, one had the kill wire burned through by the muffler, and both carbs were still at the factory HI/Low adjustments meaning that if they were run with a bad boot, they were not run long.
So my plan went from just getting some 20" bars to taking two 330's and making 1 good one to rebuilding both (along with the little red)
Oh well, it will keep my busy until football season.
I better start practicing my swear words for those 330's. (i watched Leon's video again and it reminded me of how frustrated i was doing the last one)
